Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any advice? My SCD-XA3000ES plays redbook discs fine but no longer recognises the SACD layer of hybrid discs - it just treats them as ordinary CDs. I've done a laser clean but this hasn't helped. I recall on my old XB940 that there was a laser re-alignment/calibration one could do by one's self, but I don't know if this is the same or how to do it on the XA3000ES. Getting a bit of a b*gger to find a suitable replacement now :-(. My local Sony Centre isn't much cop, I think it must be years since they've last seen any ES range kit (if at all) so I'm not sure if it is possible to get serviced professionally.

Cheers.

I replaced the laser assembly of my Sony SCD-XA777ES a couple of years ago, with a spare part bought from an asian seller on Ebay for less than $40. It fixed most of the problems, although the player still occasionally refuses to play some hybrid SACDs.

I don't know if these parts are still available today, but it was a cheap and easy fix, thanks to these instructions:

Your player likely needs a new laser. I just did a Google search and the SCD- XA3000ES player seems to use the KHM-234AMA laser. Another quick Google search finds these to be available from various suppliers. Cheap ones may or may not work. Expensive ones usually do.
Also, you can download the service manual for your player for free, and there you will find the recalibration procedure. You could also post on AudioAsylum Hi Res asking if anyone knows the calibration procedure and send it to you.

Laser replacement is generally not a difficult diy repair, in that it does not require any soldering or special tools. But you do have to follow proper procedure. A repair shop can likely do this for about an hour's shop time plus the cost of the laser.

Is it any wonder Sony are in such a bad state. A friend had similar problems with his 777ES and Sony H/O in the UK just told him that there's nothing they could do to help. And that's on a player that cost several £K on release. Too busy making a loss on flat-screen TVs I guess...

Good luck!
