Did you consider that some other fault in your player might toast the replacement lasers? Is there any way to identify original laser assembly?
1. Of course it is always possible that something else is at fault, however, it is the laser that faulted in my Marantz player, not something else. The KHM 230AAA has a known poor performance history. 2. No. However, fakes and fascimiles may work perfectly well if you get a good one. You just don't know.

I need to get one of these lasers as well - my Sony SCD XB770 is getting worse at playing hybrids. Currently on ebay, there are 3 KHM-230AAA listings, two from the same seller in China, for £23.39 + £4.42 postage. These claim to be "original Sony". There is also one from Singapore for £2.45 + £23.39 postage. So not much difference in price. Also found a place in the UK called Signals UK who have them (dunno if they have stock though) for £92ish including postage.
I have absolutely no way of knowing which of these 3 options (if any) are actually selling genuine Sony parts which won't break after 5 minutes.
Anybody got any better suggestions? I'd buy a new player if I could find one for £350ish with multi-channel and decent RBCD playback.
Thanks all Xavster
Of course they claim to be "original Sony" as the alternative is "fascimile". I've seen the Signals website, and there is also Dalbani in UK. There is also "Parts Store" in US, and Sony. I suppose you have a more likely chance with Sony or Parts Store as they are the most expensive and you get the whole transport unit, not just the laser.
Buying another player is the only other real option if replacement lasers don't work.

I don't think the laser can be bought seperately. The part KHM-230AAA that I replaced (and bought for only $40) includes the motor that spins the disc. It's the part pictured in Paul Clark's post above.

Claude, The laser can be bought separately. I have bought them. And as I have earlier written, maybe you'll have better luck than I did.

You can buy this junk and have it shipped from China for about US$12. http://s.taobao.com/search?q=KHM-230AAA
That's inventive web searching! All of these units, laser and motors, are/were made in China, even the OEM ones.
