Nice review by analogue that gives a good sense of the MoFi and earlier Sony SACDs. But reviews like this, citing the lack of audiophile-level quality, lead me to think RBCD may suffice.

Considering one could at one time purchase ALL the early SONY Dylan SACDs brand new (some in mch as well) for under $7 each*, and on my system they sound really wonderful, to pay $30 each for the stereo remasters is for those who "psychologically" need the MoFi "fix."

BTW, Amazon US has a used copy of BOTT listed as very good (in mch) for $4.09 + s/h............

I have 3 versions of this:

Original LP (owned since release.....)

RBCD

Sony SACD

Both the SACD and the LP are better than the RBCD. The LP, at least on my system, is even more open than the SACD and seems to equal the description in Analogue's review of the Mo-Fi release.

Regardless of format, this is one of those albums that is a must have for anyone who loves folk music, popular music, American roots music, or just about any genre. A classic.

+1, tream.

Replayed the mch Sony version the other night on my newly acquired Oppo BDP~105 and it sounded magnificent.

A great album by the incomparable Bobby D.

But you can't buy those out-of-print Sony SACDs for under $7 now!

And what is the relevance of a "MoFi 'fix'. A number of people have recommended these MoFi releases here, but no-one has bothered to review them. What gives? If you're on this site you "psychologically" tend to care about sound quality.

It's not as though the particular SACD transfer doesn't matter. Look at the reviews of the Channel Classics re-master of Bluebeard's Castle, originally released as a Phillips SACD.

FYI Derek Barker in Isis 171 has provided an "initial" 7-page review of the recent Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection (all CDs but many new remasters). At the end he lists his preferred version of each album. 24 are those in the box, comprising a few standard releases, a few 2009 remasters & the rest the new 2013 remasters. Otherwise his preferred versions are:

---First 5 albums: Original Mono Recordings 2010 remasters

---Highway 61 Revisited: Sony 2003 SACD

---Blonde on Blonde: MFSL SACD

---John Wesley Harding & Nashville Skyline: Sony 2003 SACD

---Planet Waves: Sony 2003 SACD

---Blood on the Tracks, Basement Tapes, Desire: MFSL SACD

---Street Legal, Slow Train Coming, Infidels, Oh Mercy, Love & Theft: Sony 2003 SACD

Derek's general comment is that "To my ears, most of these [MFSL] SACD releases sound very slightly warmer (more vinyl like) and a little less loud and 'bright' than the equivalent Sony [SACD] releases."

And rio98765 one must also consider the playback equipment and ancillary components when assessing these albums, whether RBCD, SACD mch and stereo.

I have no objections to my SONY 2003 BD releases as they do sound consistently fine on my system but if they are OOP, perhaps the MoFi "Fix" would be the cheaper (and in some cases better) way to purchase these discs.

Same here, the LP is simply more liquid, with a more articulate lower midrange. To be fair, though, the lion's share of MoFi SA-CDs have been disappointingly dry sounding.

The 2003 Sonys can be found in used bins and second hand shops for the same price as the redbook versions. They also consistently sell for around 10 bucks on various music forum classifieds.
