Yes: Fragile        (3 of 4 found this review helpful)

There's some mix-up in the previous review, which is important to correct. This version of one of the essential prog-rock albums is a sonic marvel. It has warmth, detail, depth and weight. I first listened to it last night. This is the sort of sound that once again made me wonder why I still buy, ... more

The enthusiasm shown in the title and style of the cover is well justified. The danger is that some may be put off by an impression of gimmicky contents. Far from it! The disc is of high musical worth throughout, and I'm very pleased I took the punt. Let's face it — you wouldn't normally venture ... more
Beethoven: String Quartets Opp. 18 No. 4, 130 & 133 - Fry Street Quartet          (5 of 7 found this review helpful)

Big mistake! I assumed that a (presumably) younger group like this would be aware of basic HIP principles on the use of vibrato in Beethoven. After all, these days most full symphony orchestras shed players for the symphonies, and more and more Beethoven symphony performances are by chamber ... more

I'm more than a little suspicious of this. I have the Complete Organ Music of Bach played by Hans Fagius on BlS. Five SACDs each hold an average of 242 minutes each. But this is not claimed to be anything more than CD quality - the original recording was on 18 CDs. The five discs were sold for the price of two, and BlS's advice for those who ... more

That 2-ch stereo sound you're hearing is actually correct from the audience point-of-view. The short high-pitched strings are close to the pianist and are heard slightly left of centre. The lowest strings run the full length of the instrument, so lower notes are noticeably right of centre. Of course, the pianist hears it as you describe. But by ... more

An egregious deficiency in the Search Engine on this site!

Why does the Search Engine automatically strip out lone numerals, when the standard format for listing works separates numerals from their context? Example: Standard listing: "Mahler: Symphony No. 8" Search entry: "mahler symphony 8" Search executed: "mahler symphony" Result of search: Every goddam Mahler symphony listed on the site! ... more
