If that were all true, then Love would not be the only release in surround and we would have a whole lot more. BUT, the opposite is true and there will be no more of it released. Even Paul, Ringo, and Yoko would want even more money that another surround version would entail but they do not. You can stick with your gimmicky sound, I'll stick with how it originally was supposed to sound.

The question that comes to mind: suppose the technology was available during the Beatles era to release albums in discreet 5.1 surround in a hi~rez format........would the outcome have been different?

They were always pushing the envelope going from mono>stereo>16 track>24 track and then to 48 tracks on which to record their multi~faceted albums.

But as we all know, the technology was NOT available at the time.

I look at the LOVE album as an attempt (and hardly a feeble one) to create a revisionist concept of what could have been and I know other artists of the time would've gladly followed.

Mixing 24 and 48 tracks to stereo in this rapidly advancing technological universe seems feeble to me and just a little bit archaic!

My set arrived today from amazon. I must have got lucky, but listened to sgt peppers, revolver, magical, let it be so far and all were very quiet with good sound.

By lucky do you mean a quick delivery from Amazon or the sound quality? If the latter, then you're not alone. Mine sound great too. ;)

I didn't think the Beatles ever used anything more than 8 track? Most of their albums were recorded on 4 track.

No-one can say with any accuracy what John would have thought about the 24/96 5.1 mixes on Love, we can only say with certainly what the SURVIVING members of The Beatles have said because they're the ones that said it. When Ringo and Paul were on Larry King with Olivia and Yoko (first time all four together in a room I think it was since George's passing) they both were supportive of the 5.1 mixes, and Ringo especially took the time to tell Larry, quoting somewhat verbatim as I can't find the video, that the 24/96 (yes, he mentioned the sampling rate) allowed you to hear the sounds like they were in the studio and the surround mixes the Martins came up with was an amazing experience. No doubt, he pushed for his own 5.1 release on his next solo record. LOVE isn't a gimmick, it's smuckin' fashing!! As for why no more, it wasn't a Beatles studio album, it was a release done specifically for Cirque. If they had done just Abbey Road in DVD-A 5.1 and then stopped that point might have some merit.

As for the 24/44.1 files, they are NOT the same as the ones on the USB that were dithered to 16-bit for the CD's. They have the same EQ'ing appplied, but there is no limiting on these files whereas there was some on the USB/CD releases.

Sean Magee also commented on the cutter at Abbey Road to explain why more than 24/44.1 was unnecessary. He said the cutter there starts rolling off at 14kHz and cannot cut any information above 24kHz, so 24/96 would have been pointless.

My response is, why not get a cutter than can and go all analogue?

It's fairly obvious that we aren't getting an all analogue chain from EMI anytime soon, given that they'd need all four estates to sign off. However the 24/192 flat transfer exists and so in another 3~5 years I expect we'll see The Beatles Blu-ray box set come out. Would be nice to see some of the multi-track albums get a 24/192 5.1 mix from the Martins, but I'm sure we'll see either 24/192 or 24/96 Mono/Stereo Blu-ray sets to bring the remasters project to its close.

One other thing about the vinyl, Magee says the EQ changes they made are designed not to make these sound like the original vinyl releases, but to make them sound as close to the way The Beatles sounded in the studio, whatever that means. There are two pressings, the North American pressings are done at Rainbo and the UK/EU pressings are done at Optimal in Germany. You may find if you buy in NA that you get quite a bit of non-fill, I'd recommend the UK pressings. I have Abbey Road and Let It Be en route from Amazon.uk as their transatlantic shipping prices are great. Looking forward to hearing this and then tracking down an original UK pressing to compare.

Maybe someday Analogue Productions will get the licence to the analogue tapes and we'll get all analogue 45rpm QRP-pressed vinyl and analogue>DSD direct SACD's? *drool*

...My definitive Beatles fix, however, is still the absolutely brilliantly astounding LOVE album in DVD~A which hints at what the Beatles should sound like ........ really don't think John Lennon would still prefer the mono versions if he were alive to hear the surround mixes the Martins extracted from the absolute master tapes.

Thanks for the heads up on that
Bought it on Amazon US for $17.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with it - I certainly am.

Now if only George and Giles Martin could be tempted to work on the Beatles catalogue in the same way as Steve Wilson has done with King Crimson etc.

Or, vice versa. LOVE IS THAT GREAT!

Play it Loud.
