So I went with the Sony 590 to replace my ailing Panasonic Blu-ray player (c.2009). I'm very impressed the quality of the DSD out over HDMI. Thanks for the advice!

Good choice. This now gives you the options of highest DSD-PCM decimation rate (176.4/24) of any BD player, excellent SA-CD support and on-line services.

For on-line music, when you get the time you should set-up an account with:

It's 13 euro per month for subscriptions, but the first month is free.

Berliner Philharmoniker have superb HD archives dating from 1996. Great catalogue from which to choose.

Indeed, and there are some true and rare treasures there, like Abbado's Schumann pieces AND "DAS LIED"!!! (Finally, after a lifetime of waiting!) with KAUFMANN AND VON OTTER!! From last year!

Now I know where heaven is.

Excellent. So what is your full system now, and how have you implemented, aside from DSD to the receiver? E.g. audyssey?

Front: B&W CM7
Center: B&W CM Centre
Rear: B&W DM602 S3
Sub: Velodyne EQ-Max 10"
Receiver: Yamaha RX-V1065

Thanks.

I saw that in the music selection; I'm a bit skeptical how often I'd end up using it given that I'll sometimes go two weeks without watching what I have out from Netflix. But if I didn't live in NYC with so much access to live orchestral music, I probably wouldn't think twice about subscribing to the service.

I don't know if it qualifies as a hi end surround reciever or not, but I've been very happy with my Arcam AVR600 married to an Oppo 95. The Arcam's room correction seems basic to me (I've also used XT in the past)but for multi channel I'm using the analog outputs on the Oppo. The difference between the analog and hdmi is pretty clear when listening to music--the analogue soundstage is wider and more natural sounding, even if it requires a few ticks more volume. Listening to Petty's live blu ray in this manner is very impressive and I often use it as a demo for folks not familiar with what surround can sound like. My 2 cents.

If you distrust the quality of an AV Receiver but want multichannel you could try the Marantz AV8003 and MM8003 multi-channel pre-amp and power amplifier combination or the somewhat more afforably priced AV7005 and MM7055.

I haven't kept up with the whole thread, but Marantz has just got some new models out:

AV7701, AV8801 (Pre-amps) and MM8077 (Power Amplifier) -- all multi-channel.

Up to this point I have been learning & experiencing SACD via a 2 channel setup. Curious about multichannel. I understand that generally speaking that after switching to a multichannel SACD or universal player, my options are A) 5.1 preamp/processor connected to a multichannel amp B) a 5.1 receiver. Seems like there are hi-end pre/pros available, but not sure about that for receivers.

Can you recommend a hi-quality receiver? Is there anything out there that (loosely) rates as an audiofile option for a surround receiver? I think I saw something Denon that looked promising but I can't remember......

My retailer told me the Cambridge Audio Azur 551R 7.1 HDMI receiver is just as good as an ensemble of several Azur 350A (same electronics, no concentration tricks, optimal venting system).
