why?

I think it's garnered rave reviews on BD (video) already and, besides, why shouldn't one be excited?!?

it is rare to win the Tchaikovsky / Chopin / Rubinstein competitions in a year and he did it. Furthermore, as a member of the Remembering Rubinstein Yahoo group, we had pretty good dialogue from someone very close to Mr. Rubinstein who went to the competition and recorded that performance.

Thanks.

My 'why?' was not intended as a comment on the pianist ... but rather:

a) my wondering what one would do with yet another rendition of Tchaikovsky 1, and

b) my disappointment in recent Mariinsky issues on the sonic side, especially given that their early releases were top notch.

Thanks for the blurb re Daniil ... looked him up ... he looks like a brilliant pianist ... lots of goodies on youtube with him, here playing a Fazioli:

understand. I certainly dont need another Tchaikovsky 1 (i might have 30 at this point) but its popular for a reason. The Schubert / Liszt pieces also intrigue me...I love the Erlking - it is so fun to play

Can't help but agree with Castor - the sound is truly abysmal and Trifonov does not deserve such.

Unfortunately it´s just like You say. I was very disappointed. The worst recording coming my way. In the future I will listen carefully before buying from this source.

I was surprised that Gergiev would agree to put his name to a debut disc from a young unknown competition winner (very unusual) unless he is sponsoring the kid.

I can't go quite as far as you in condemning this disc out-of-hand but the performance lacks authority and emotional expression as one might perhaps imagine although Trifinov's playing is supremely technically competent. It is rather more than typing in the music but far from convincing on a score that even old masters like Claudio Arrau had trouble mastering.

The recording is also somewhat abrasive and one notes that Classic Sounds have stepped back from this one (seemingly) and encouraged Russian engineers to run the recording side of things.

Worth a listen but harder to recommend amongst a very crowded field of superb interpretations on vinyl, CD & SACD. Not sure who'd buy it apart from people like me?

Wow, that's disappointing. I just removed it from my Wishlist!
