Ok, I'm new. I have tried to find any current threads on this subject and did not find any. So please excuse me if I missed it and point me in the right direction. I am currently upgrading my 2 channel system and am trying to decide between a new CD only player or an SACD/CD combo. I do NOT have a audio dealer that sells high end equipment within 100 miles of where I live so I can't go and listen to equipment. My budget is limited but I want to buy the best I can. For those of you who have recently bought new units I would appreciate your reviews (pro and con) for units priced under $3,000.

Thanks!

Ah, now I see, sorry: I live in Italy, paid my player in euros, and forgot that
*now* 1 euro is quite a bit more than 1 american dollar! Out of curiosity, which
is the best price in dollars, around 3500?!?

Would you consider used gear? I bought my Sony SCD-1 for the equivalent of $2200 which was half of what a new unit would have cost me.

Just received a Marantz SA-11S1 this week, it is by far the best source device I have ever heard - to me it's basically a transparent conduit from the master tape to my amplifier.

You make it sound very tempting! I've just been to the marantz uk website; what on earth does this mean?

"Switchable noise-shaper on top of the digital filters tit allows additional fine tuning."

I believe the noise shaping algorithm is for CD / CD layer playback only. From the manual:

"Noise shaping is a type of digital feedback used in the algorithms for oversampling. This digital feedback enables improved linearity for low levels (-70 to -90 dB) and better noise characteristics in the audible band. However, this digital feedback is still feedback nonetheless...........Although no measurement differences are shown in the SA-11S1, the sound quality is changed. Therefore, make the setting according to your preferences."

To me, this is one of those pieces of gear that people will look back on 10 years from now as a pinnacle reached.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to go and have a listen. (I assume one of the words in the quote from marantz's website is superfluous, although it's copied and pasted into on London dealer's page verbatim!)

I would if I could find any. There are NO dealers here where I live. And buying online private party is a bit risky since you don't get a warranty and can't return if it's DOA. The Marantz mentioned seems to be the hot ticket and I may have locateded a new one for $2,300 USD.
