Following up on a thread entitled 'clueless packaging', ...
I have played this SACD precisely twice ... and the crappy paper-based packaging is already all dog-eared ... and I am a fairly careful person with such things. It is just rubbish packaging. Just RUBBISH.
SACDs should be packaged in Super-jewel boxes. Either do it properly, or sell downloads to the 13 people who pay for them.

His singing is rather eloquent 'though. Nice disc giving much pleasure.
No problem with the UK packaging which seems to survive even high street shop racks.

Not for me. I welcome the paper-based packaging which I find easier to manipulate than the super-jewel boxes, especially for multidisc releases. None of mine have become worn or dog-eared. OTOH, I am fumbly with the plastic boxes and they are often damaged/destroyed when I drop them. (In fact, many arrive already damaged.) But that is my personal opinion and I am not a crusader.

The enclosed (beautifully printed) booklet is 70 pages long, including nearly 40 pages of lyrics in three languages. I don't think it would be possible to fit all of that material into a super jewel case insert. Recorded, edited and mastered in DSD and praiseworthy for the sterling performances as well as the sound quality. Along with Wanderer - Christoph Prégardien, Ensemble Kontraste, this is my favorite recent vocal and chamber ensemble release.

Having recently seen and heard Mark Padmore as the Evangelist in the Rattle St. Matthew Passion ritualized by Peter Sellars on Blu-ray, I am inclined to want to get this SACD. He was absolutely spectacular in that. Count me as a Padmore fan.

Must say: the final Track ...
Track 21: Finzi's Dies Natalis ...
... is earthy, rich and sublime. The opening bars of Track 21 sound at first like the 2nd mvmt of Brahms Violin Sonata No. 3 ... and then transforms from Brahms into ravishing Elgar polyphony ... highlight of the disc for me.

Have often pondered buying this Colin, as I love Finzi's music but I always check myself when I remember that I can't stand Britten's music for tenor. Is this worth getting just for the Finzi?

It is very well worth buying as Mark Padmore is an absolutely brilliant young singer.
Not only this but also his more recent recording for US Harmonia Mundi Vaughan Williams: On Wenlock Edge, Ten Blake Songs (Wenlock Edge and Blake songs).
I enjoyed both discs last evening which lifted my mood immensely. The realism of his voice on both discs is uncanny.

Hmmm. Is 52 now considered young? Great news for some of us!
