..there is no such entity as a blu-spec sacd...

Not yet, but it's the next logical step. Until Universal released it's first SHM-SACD there was only SHM-CDs. This 12-disc set of a work less than 80 minutes long just seems imbecile.

I have sechs versions Variations Goldberg to include performers Blandine Rannou and Jacques Loussier. Be surprised if anyone here has former but not surprised if some have the Jazzified latter.

I have this forthcoming set on order at HMV Japan. It is/was due out on 26 Sept 2012.

I received an email today from them that says:

================================================================
Release date of your following order has been postponed.

The new release date will be noticed on the site after determination.

[Title]Glenn Gould - The Goldberg Variations 30th anniversary Edition (3SACD Hybrid)(2DVD)(7Blu-spec CD)

================================================================

.

On the other hand, if you visit the page at HMV Japan where this is sold, it states:

.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Availability : Sold Out Limited Editions
We regret that we cannot accept orders for this limited item as the available quantity has now sold out
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Under my pre-order, it is still saying delivery on 26 Sept. It appears that HMV have already sold out of their allocation.

I have the Jazzified latter, and the French Philips re-releases of the five original Play Bach discs, and all the Telarc ones, including the misfires...

As for the Goldbergs I must have at least 70+ recordings...

I can't see any reference to this set at the Sony Music Japan site
-although- (better value)
Sony Music Japan will release a series of Glenn Gould Hybrid discs in October
Specially remastered and remixed from the analog masters by Andreas Meyer.

All very confusing. According to HMV:

Sold Out Limited Editions

Release date: unreleased items

Other retailers like CDbanq continue to list it.

And yet, it seems to have disappeared from the Sony home page. It seems possible that HMV sold out of their allocation ... but also possible that the whole rather extravagant project got cancelled. I guess I'll know on 26 Sept, when my copy is still slated to ship (or not) :)

Update from HMV Japan today on my order of this:

-------------------------------------------------------------

We regret that we have just been informed by the manufacturer that the
release of the below item has been indefinitely postponed. As a result we
have now cancelled this item from your order.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Given that they have done the work, maybe we will be lucky and see them release the 1980 Goldbergs on SACD as a single disc, direct to DSD from the analog version of the recording (it was recorded in both early raw digital and mature cloth-bound analogue).
