If you don't have a recording with the violins divided, that's reason enough to get the Eschenbach.
Hi Seth I have MTT and Fischer both of which have violins divided. I agree it makes a big difference.

Peter, what about DVDs? I'm ashamed for having paid good money for the 1987 film, 'Mahler: To Live, I Will Die'. ( No, the title wasn't used for Tony Blair's keynote address at the Labour Party conference after old Wolfgang was manhandled out. ) Anyone have the DVDs of the Bernstein cycle yet?
In Europe, the satellite channel Eins Festival (free to air in the UK), has been occasionally broadcasting the Gielen performances with the SWR Sinfonieorchester. I have recorded symphonies 9 and 10 (Cooke completion) on DVD. Superb picture and sound. Worth looking out for - I hope that more will follow. I also have recorded an excellent DVD of Mahler 2 by Boulez and the Berlin Staatskapelle (soloists Petra Lang and Diana Damru).

The Bernstein DVD´s are with the Vienna Philharmonic in all works except no 2 (LSO) and Das Lied..(Israel). No Concertgebouw.
You're right! I can't imagine what I was thinking of, unless I was confusing the DVD and CD issues. Thanks for that.

That's good to hear; perhaps with luck they'll be issued on DVD commercially.

The Rondo-burleske is stated to be his most sarcastic movement, full of irony and ironic quotation, eg, from 'the Merry Widow'.
This is interesting. Could this be a refererance to his wife Alma who refused to give up her affair with Walter Gropius?

--Maybe Tom Leher will be reissued as SACD, his lyric sarcasm really cries out for higher fidelity:
"The loveliest girl in Vienna Was Alma, the smartest as well Once you picked her up on your antenna You'd never be free of her spell
"Her lovers were many and varied From the day she began her beguine There were three famous ones whom she married And God knows how many between
"Alma, tell us All modern women are jealous Which of your magical wands Got you Gustav and Walter and Franz?
"The first one she married was Mahler Whose buddies all knew him as Gustav And each time he saw her he'd holler "Ach, that is the fräulein I moost hav"
"Alma Mahler-Gropius-Werfel Their marriage, however, was murder He'd scream to the heavens above "I'm writing 'Das Lied von der Erde' And she only wants to make love!" "Alma, tell us All modern women are jealous You should have a statue in bronze For bagging Gustav and Walter and Franz "While married to Gus, she met Gropius And soon she was swinging with Walter Gus died, and her tear drops were copious She cried all the way to the altar "But he would work late at the Bauhaus And only come home now and then She said, "What am I running, a chow house It's time to change partners again"
"Alma, tell us All modern women are jealous Though you didn't even use Ponds You got Gustav and Walter and Franz
"While married to Walt she'd met Werfel And he too was caught in her net He married her, but he was carefel 'Cause Alma was no Bernadette
"And that is the story of Alma Who knew how to receive and to give The body that reached her embalma Was one that had known how to live
"Alma, tell us How can they help being jealous Ducks always envy the swans Who get Gustav and Walter You never did falter With Gustav and Walter and Franz"

If there was going to be a movie made about her, it would just have to be called '( nee ) Schindler's List'. Maybe Steven Spielberg is waiting for Dakota Fanning to grow up, so she can assume the title part when she does more than just scream.
Frau Merkel must really look to Alma to improve her coalition building skills.

Bought the Bernstein Unitel DVDs of symphonies 1 to 3 as a trial. The Second is the LSO version which appeared on LP in the mid-Seventies. Check out the great hairstyles: the LSO cymbal player appears to have stuck on his head the same wig that Austin Powers used on his chest. Also on this DVD, interesting trying to work out whether the lady in the front row near the centre aisle is kneeling on her chair or is a double amputee. Despite playing the PCM stereo tracks, again there seems to be a lack of recording amplitude compared to RBCDs of the same vintage. Does anyone who has these DVDs concur; eg the last movement of the Third seems to have had major dynamic compression?

This is a perfectly good spot to discuss Fischer's upcoming Mahler 2. If anyone wanted to draw a cartoon of the prophet Mahler ( peace be upon him) they could post it here.

Fischer's coming out with an SACD Mahler 2nd? Oh boy, maybe time to buy an SACD player again. (I'm slowly coming out of a year of vinyl fever--a changed man--but about ready to get back into SACD.)
