While two reviewers here at SA-CD.net discounted the worth of the BIS Grieg Norwegian Dances on SACD, I would say that disc is a great one not only for background listening but also for serious classical listeners as well.

Hey, I like it! Not the most challenging music but a very persuasive performance and great sonics.

Stephen,
This is a helpful list. What if you posted sales charts differentiated by genre - that is, separate Classical, Pop, R&B, and Country charts? That would be another way of helping people find music that other people like.

For all the classical and jazz releases, it seems there is a relative dearth of pop and rock offerings. This is another indication to me that we've not yet turned the corner and made this a popular format; only the more upscale audiophiles are listening. Of course, "All generalities are false."

Here's a few more recent titles which I'd recommend for great music, performances and sonics:

Bach: Christmas Oratorio - Netherlands Bach Society
Brahms: Symphony No. 4 - Columbia Symphony Orchestra/Walter
Prokofiev: Piano Sonatas Nos. 5, 7 & 9 - Peter Jablonski
Vaughan Williams: The Poisoned Kiss - Hickox
Mozart: Piano Sonatas - Andreas Staier

OK, the Brahms/Walter isn't new but I'm continually amazed how good this sounds. There's a review of the Mozart/Staier in the latest (April) Stereophile which is spot on. Even given the limitations of the sound of the fortepiano (and maybe a less than flattering recording) Staier's performance is one I keep coming back to. I didn't like this at all at first.

Stephen, I don't know whether you consider this is the right thread for contributors to this site to post SACDs that they consider 'turkeys' which should be dismissed or, at least, approached with caution. It would help newcomers to avoid being very disappointed and wasting their money.
The main criteria should be sound quality and performance rather than musical worth, which is even more a matter of personal taste.
I should like to nominate:

Rachmaninov Piano Concertos Nos 2 and 3/ Scherbakov/ Russian SSO/ Yablonsky/ Naxos 6.110013 ( Dull performances, thick sound, badly balanced)

Britten/ McPhee BBCSO/ Slatkin/ Chandos CHSA 5017 (routine performances, percussion and pianos lack impact) Sorry Chris!

Tchaikovsky 1812 etc./ Cincinnati Pops/Kunzel Telarc SACD60541 (Again routine performances, terrible "digital cannon", not enough hall ambience)

As I am in total agreement with the choices of excellent SACDs posted up to now, so I don't think my own system has unduly influenced my opinions of the above.

Agree with you on the Kunzel 1812 - a fairly stiff performance. I didn't think there was that much room for interpretation in the 1812 until I heard this (one of the first SACD's I purchased). I've heard Bernstein and Haitink do it much better (to mention 2 that must be among dozens).

I disagree, IMHO all Chandos SACDs I have so far, with the exception of Vaughan Williams fith symphony, sound excellent, and the Britten disc is one of my favourites, with very natural and realistic sound I think.

I just realised I've topped the 120 mark now (125) and thought I'd update my "best list" and check to see whether I'd kept to my 5% limit for Rosettes. I had, and listed below are my six Rosette titles, plus, allowing myself the next 10% of my SACDs, a list of my "top 12" five-star discs.

The six Rosettes (IMHO) are

Bach, J.S. Art of Fugue/Krigbaum Red Rose
Brahms Clarinet Trio & Quintet/Fageus Opus3
Faure, Ravel, Debussy French Piano Trios/Florestan Hyperion
Handel Fireworks and Water Music Telarc
Vaughan Williams Symphony 4 Chandos
Medieval Primus ex Apostolis Fone.

My top 12 5-stars are:

Beethoven Symph 5 & 7/Kleiber DG
Beethoven Symp 5 (& Mendelssohn 4th)/Davis Pentatone RQR
Dvorak Symphonies 8 & 9/Fischer Philips
Mahler Symphony 5/Haenchen Pentatone
Mahler Symphony no. 1/SFS/MTT Avie
Monteverdi Sacred Music vol 1/Kings Consort Hyperion
Mussorgsky/Saint Saens Pictures/Symph. No 3 PentatoneRQR
Schubert & Mozart Trout Quintet/Clarinet Quintet/ PentatoneRQR
Shostakovich/Schedrin Piano Concertos Hyperion
Tallis Spem In Alium/Magnificat Linn
Vaughan Williams Symphony 2 “London”/Hickox Chandos
