John has summed it up beautifully. One of the very best LSO Live recordings yet and it could be that for once the limited forces deployed throughout this work do not overload the dear old Barbican. Beautifully weighted and pointed by Noseda and a superb line up of sympathetic soloists makes this for me the best version yet on SACD and possibly the best on disc. Beats Hickox's version hands down.
Makes me wish I hadn't turned down the offer of tickets to be there last October... tsk!

I've been a huge fan of Ian Bostridge in this work since hearing him live at the RFH with Bernard Haitink and Thomas Hampson (all EMI artists at the time - why did no-one think to send them off to Abbey Road for a recording?) and I think this LSO Live recording captures his unique timbre better than the Pappano SACD.
But can anyone on this forum confirm the original recording format? The LSO website coyly refers to High Resolution recording (most other LSO Live recordings are described as DSD) so I'm thinking a 24/96 download be might be closer than usual to the master tape...

Hi Hugh
I checked the publicity material that came with this disc and unlike most LSO Live SACD's it does not say recorded in DSD so it may be 24/96, as was their recent Turnage recording. I totally agree that Bostridge is incomparable in this work.
