I had ordered this title from my usual UK supplier some time ago and eventually they confirmed it was deleted. Availability of many Telarc titles listed on SA-CD.net was very restricted - either none, second hand only or very expensive. Now this one is available again at Amazon at reasonable price and on checking the list on this site most of the 100 titles are available at most merchants at good prices. Have I missed something? Have Telarc/Concord re-pressed a batch and released them onto the market? Has the listing on SA-CD been reduced to only include available titles? ( This does not seem to apply to other labels - eg deleted Naxox titles still show and turn at merchants occasionally.) Anyone got any information?

Not sure, but thanks for the heads up. Probably a distributor somewhere offloaded unsold inventory.

For a while, most Telarc SACD's, especially those remastered Soundstream recordings, as this one is, were available for ridiculously low prices ($3 to $5 each!), and then they appeared to be sold out.

While you may not be able to benefit from such no longer attainable prices, this disc is worth the money: it's a compilation of material from several recordings, and is lush, rich and just plain lovely. And it's incredibly better sounding than the oridinal CD's too.

These out of print SACDs show up on Berkshire Record Outlet from time to time.

Are there home user DACs that can play 50kHz recordings? Does Telarc convert 16/50 PCM to DSD digitally or did they have to transfer the sound from vintage Soundstream machines through the analogue output to a DSD DAC?

Usually DACs are specified for certain standard sampling frequencies (44, 48, 88, 96, 176, 192). But if they support 50Khz and 16/50 data copies exist, these could be released as 16/50 stereo downloads, which would be closest to the actual recording.

I believe the answer to your first question is, "no." Insofar as how Telarc converted 50KHZ PCM recordings to SACD's, I can only refer to the information on the booklet supplied with these recordings: "DSD technology and its frequency response of over 100KHZ allows the Soundstream tapes to be remastered to DSD, presenting to the listener the true sound of the recording."

The older CD's of 50KHZ Soundstream masters didn't sound as good as they could have, due to (again quoting Telarc's notes) "...converted from 50KHZ to 44.1KHZ, a process that inherently causes a loss of quality...by the complex mathematical process needed to derive 44.1KHZ from 50KHZ."

I had often wondered why, when I first purchased a CD player, that my Telarc CD's didn't sound as good as the same thing on LP, and only got the answer to that when purchasing the first of many DSD-remastered Soundstream recordings.

I own about a dozen or so of these Soundstream mastered SACD's, and have to say that I find each and every one of them sonically delightful. Some, such as the Barber disc that's the topic of this thread, were quite a bargain (even at non-discounted prices) since they incorporated material from more than one disc.

And, as we all know now, Concord Music has unceremoniously shelved Telarc, and all of its key personnel, so the supply of any Telarc SACD will continue to diminish.

Actually Concord Music Group has ended the SACD program of all the two dozen labels it owns, including many fine jazz labels.

The key personal became 5/4 Productions and they still record for Telarc on a per project basis as opposed to employees.

New Telarc recordings are still coming out including Paul McCartney's new ballet "Ocean's Kingdom", however they are scaling back both the number of projects and large orchestra recordings.

New Telarc releases so far in 2012: Chopin's Complete Preludes (Vanessa Perez, piano), Grandeur of the Baroque (David Russell, guitar), Dvorák: Cello Concerto, The Water Goblin, In Nature's Realm (Zuill Bailey, Jun Markl, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra), Brahms Works for Cello and Piano (Zuill Bailey), Peter Cincotti's Metropolis, John Pizzarelli's Double Exposure, Otis Taylor's Contraband, and Legacy: The Best Of Tab Benoit. CD and MP3 only.

Only the 5/4 production crew and upper Concord management get to hear the DSD recorded multichannel program, but the fact that they are still paying for the high-resolution multichannel program suggests that there will be high-resolution multichannel versions in the future.

HDTracks now has three Telarc high-resolution downloads (stereo only) with the promise of more.

Oh! I wish I had this SACD! I own the RBCD and have listened to it dozens of times. It is such a wonder! And if the RBCD sounds as good as it does, I cannot imagine the SACD incarnation. A pity it sells so expensively!

If I read you correctly, all of the new (upcoming?) Telarc releases are CD's and/or downloads, but not SACD's. The "5/4" production company, though comprised of former key Telarc personnel doesn't seem to have had much influlence on Concord Music's business plan, and to suggest that there are SACD's in store for the future may be just wishful thinking.

Long before the "cleaning house" at Telarc, I was fully aware of what was about to happen, having been informed by a former employee there, but was asked not to say anything, and so I didn't. I've also had many a conversation with Jack Renner, who, ever so diplomatically, said he "retired" when Concord Music bought Telarc, but it was very evident to me that his retirement was forced. There was certainly no mistaking his disappointment once the 26 or so former Telarc employees were given their walking papers, since he described it as watching his life's work get tossed out.

I truly believe Telarc is dead and gone. It was far and away my favorite CD label, but very much a mixed bag (to me, at least) when it came to SACD's. Still, an audio benchmark was established by the brand, and Concord Music doesn't give a s**t.

I said in my previous post that I had ordered this item from Amazon UK (One of their merchants 'You want it - we gotit') as it was on offer for under £20. At the time there were other Amazon sites with it at reasonable prices. My order has just been cancelled by Amazon and no reason given. I must assume that the seller decided he could get more for it elsewhere. In my opinion he should not have accepted the order in the first place. This the second time this has happened with an Amazon merchant. Beware of Amazon!
Update: Merchant have sent an email saying they could not find it in their warehouse. Mmm...
