I also really like the performances, but given the distortions, I'm fine to stick with the CD version.

And saves $47, which seems an awfully high price for a negligible, almost nonexistent, gain in this particular case.

This is one of seven discs I ordered from Amazon.fr (after canceling a prior order for all ten discs from another retailer which did not ship when estimated and could not provide an accurate shipping cost). With shipping to the USA, this disc cost approximately $18.57 (edited to exclude VAT). This was aided by paying slightly less for shipping per item due to buying multiple discs. It would be outstanding if the Amazon US site had a price competitive with its sister sites, but until then, it's easy enough to order from elsewhere.

I did not have any of these recordings previously, so I'm in a different boat than many of those here. Based on what I've read, I expect to enjoy these and the other EMI discs very much.

The triple concerto is amazing, both on the audio side and the performance then again how can you beat this line-up
Oistrakh, Rostropovich, Richter, Karajan, and the Berliner Philarmoniker, mind blowing playing, so intense. The 3 solo instruments
are very well recorded, they do not get lost in the mix, maybe in modern term the violin is a little closed miked but I like it
it give more body to the sound, which is really big, a la "Living Stereo" sure it has a little vintage coloring but I do not mind, in actual fact
I am partial to it.
The violin concerto, is a legendary performance and their is not much to say about it, on the audio side it is not as good as the Beethoven triple but
still a good, 3 1/2 * would be my rating, and remember I rarely give 5 stars
The Double concerto is a little disappointing audio wise, definitely the weakest of the 3 pieces, but still OK
I still prefer my Living Stereo

No argument with that at all. The performances have spoken for themselves over the decades.

Interestingly, the price for this SACD at Amazon US went down overnight to $20, a far more reasonable figure for this retread of notable performances. Still, given the recording technology involved and the availability of better recorded alternatives, I wonder about the advantage over the CD priced by Amazon as low as $7.

Not so surprising. The new price is indicative when the official release date is in the US. The older price was simply based on import pricing.

I can't imagine how the recording engineers allowed the tape (or compressors) to saturate so much in the Brahms Double. It's mostly audible in the tutti sections--the soloists and less loud sections sound pretty good. Still, the performance is so intense that I can overlook the sound issues.

Well said, and you do get a triple concerto in pretty good sound.

There's a great Triple Concerto conducted by Fricsay though not as yet on SACD:

I would love to see Fricsay on SACD.

I was never a huge fan of this recording of the Triple Concerto - I think it is a tad bloated. Owned it for years. However, I must be missing something...Norman Lebrecht, in his book "The Life and Death of Classical Music" included this as one of his 20 worst recordings of all time....Since the execrable Lebrecht is a documented shader of truth, there must be more in this recording than met my eye (or ear).

His book The Maestro Myth was bad.....full of sly innuendos, undocumented assertions, and unwarranted character assassinations....I bought the "Life and Death of Classical Music" with my eyes wide open, because I just had to see what was on his list of the top 100 classical recordings ever made (as well as his bottom 20).....don't bother, not worth it.
