What a simply wonderful SACD, beautifully played and performed and magnificently recorded to deliver one of the most believable acoustics on disc. Absolutely spell-binding. Excellent physical presentation of the packaging and booklet notes contributes to it's 'must-have' desirability.

This is the sort of disc that is often over-looked at first site, all too familiar repertory on a little known label by a so-so orchestra from a forgotten land....

Don't let any of that put you off, you've never heard these pieces played so passionately or so lovingly. This is a rare gem of a find to treasure for ever but don't complain to me when you find yourself mopping up floods of tears from the emotion of it all.

Perhaps a tantalising glimpse of heaven that sometimes we may be allowed?

I know you're kidding John, but watch it, or we'll set the dingoes on you. By the way, I agree with you about the disc, - a little gem; fine and loving performances with Melba's best sound yet.

It's remarkable how often Australians lose any sense of humour when comments are made about their country - always looking to see some insult. The point of John's comment is that people should not (mis-)judge this book by its cover and apply misconceptions about the quality of recordings and musicians from far-flung lands. It wasn't a jibe at Australians, tongue-in-cheek or otherwise, just a matter-of-fact statement in praise of Australian music-making - at least on this disc. It certainly does not warrant a bristling "I know you must be joking but watch out" response, no matter how jocularly expressed.

You seem to be the only one with no sense of humour on this thread Osbert.

I must start looking into some of the Melba recordings hiredfox. Some seem to be getting high praise indeed.

An Australian responds. QED.

You've carried out a survey of the entire sa-cd.net membership already?

Seems like you have some cultural issues to deal with Osbert. My background should have little consequence on recognising a remark that was far from "bristling".

Why would I need to survey the sa-cd.net membership? Didn't you read what I said, or do you have comprehension issues as well?

I have hesitated in commenting on this disc as I currently don't have my Esoteric SA50 player. I am using a Cambridge Audio player as a stop gap which can produce wildly varying results so I won't comment on sound quality.

However, I was at the concert recorded and I felt at the time, as did my partner, that the Lark Ascending performance was earth bound. I was interested in seeing if a performance feels different on disc to the live experience particularly after the comments above and else where. In this case the answer is that the discs are like the live event. The Lark Ascending is not a good performance. It simply fails to take off.

The Sinfonia da Requiem and Flos Campi were terrific in the hall and are on disc.

The performance of On Wenlock Edge (a separate recording) doesn't strike me as anything special which is a shame as I have admired Davislim's previous work.

Things may feel different when I get my proper player back

Buy this disc for the Britten and Flos Campi.

It seems to have everything to do with your perceptions.

The comment to which nucaleena responded was neither disparaging of Australians nor humorous. So why is the response, "I know your joking" (there was no joke in the first place) and then "but watch out or we'll set the dingoes on you" (what, saying - presumably to the Europeans, Americans and Asians on the site - "take off your Eurocentric blinkers" is somehow a jibe?)?

Bristling, IMHO.

Indeed it does My Parsely. My perception of the original post was that it was humorous. You seem to have decided it wasnt without corresponding with John (hiredfox). I replied in similar vein, the dingoes reference which you take such exception to being patently an attempt at humour even if you didn't see it that way. Broaden your perceptions and lighten up.

P.S. I see you live in Sydney. With your attitudes, why??

PPS will not be replying further. Dont want to dignify your bristles with responses.
