Hmm...I think I'd prefer harpsichord accompaniment, but the harp will create a more gentle tone--might be interesting!

My copy arrived today--it's lovely! Beautiful, clear sound (recorded in a studio, so it is not especially reverberant, but it still has some air around the instruments), wonderful playing--I'd say it's a hit! I didn't care for her Bach Sonatas & Partitas, but I like her playing on this disc. On a side note, I inquired through her website and asked if this were an SACD recording--she replied personally and confirmed that it is! (It's also m-ch, too.)

What Fugue said, except I loved the solo Bach. On the sonatas not originally written for violin, I find what Ms. St. John does with the music quite beautiful because the musical expression comes to the forefront. Also, I find the harp playing not only lovely but quite a virtuoso display.

At first, I was hesitant to order this since I prefer piano or harpsichord accompaniment, but I must say the the harp sounds great! It helps having such a fine player, and the instrument does shed some interesting light on the music. For those of you who think harpsichord is too jangling and that the piano can overwhelm, perhaps this harp version is the way to go!

Ahh to be the cat amongst the pigeons ... but based on the online samples (talking just performance), I would rather stick with that which exists elsewhere at the moment, in particular ...
* With harpsichord accompaniment: Oistrakh (very formal and proper - have this on LP!) or Szeryng, or perhaps Grumiaux (bit smooth for my Bach taste & too reverberant).
* With piano accompaniment: Glenn Gould with Laredo. This is more like sonata for piano with violin accompaniment ... well, not quite ... but Gould really brings out the interesting lines in the 'piano' part ... and it is fabulous and original ... but perhaps better suited as a second copy.
OTOH - Lara St. John may be prettier than Oistrakh.
