Hello guys, i was just curious to know, if any of you listen to 2 channel SHM SACD's through a multi channel surround setting ?...or would you only listen to 2 channel, as they were intended ? I've recently purchased two Stevie Wonder SHM SACD's ( my first purchases ) & they sound great on a multi channel setting. Just wondered if anyone had any feedback / views ?

From my experience with them, and with stereo listening in general, is that overall I prefer listening to them in their discrete intended listening method. However, I have a handful of stereo formats that do sound quite good with an All Channel Stereo. I never use a matrix processor like Dolby Pro Logic II. All Channel Stereo is still technically a discrete listening mode.

I actually listen to my music ( a recently purchased Sony AVR ) on an HD DCS setting, which is suggested for movies. I've just listened to " Songs In The Key Of Life " on the correct setting, i.e. 2 channel and i actually preferred it, to a multi channel setting. The wierd thing is i've listened to " Hotter Than July " via both settings, and i prefer this on the multi channel setting ! ( although, i do like it on 2 channel, as well )

It depends on the recording. I do like all channel stereo. There is still a bias towards the fronts, so it is not like you have headphones on where the sound is around your head. But the backs give it a sense of holography. Of course, it cannot compare to a well mastered surround sacd.

That's the fun of having an AV processor that allows you to experiment with the playback! Stevie may have used a different recording scheme for that song, and as a result it might sound good processed in a particular way. Having a good sacd player is a good thing, but if you have only that, you're stuck with the cd/stereo-sacd/multi-track sacd options.

2 channel, as intended. But then, I am 2 channel only. LOL

To be honest Ive never used any of the psudo surround options provided by my receiver for any of my SACD's, perhaps I should give it a try but I'm a stickler for keeping the signal unsullied, not even using EQ or Bass Management.

I like the DTS NEO 6 Music surround on many two channel SACD recordings, but I'm more inclined to use it to add space to RBCD. Experiment! And remember that a well made 2 channel SACD may not need any enhancement. I've been using ambiance recovery in rear channels since about 1980-- A Bang & Olufsen matrix system to start. Essentially a Haffler efffect circuit. I usually had to pad the rears to keep them from being too loud.
The various Dolbys seem to alter the front channels, and I much prefer the DTS NEO.

My new AVR doesn't have multi channel connections ( i'm using HDMI connectivity ) so there isn't anything to press for Multi, hence i mainly set to HD DCS setting and it sounds great. I listened more to " Songs In The Key Of Life " in 2 channel, and i have to say i was quite impressed ! The DSD transfer from the analogue master tapes, seems to have been done well. It's like having SACD quality, but obviously with only 2 channels. My RBCD's sound very impressive too...like listening to new recordings !

I play them with "Inside the Great Pyramid" echo simulation with infrabass booster enabled. Always impressive.
