So beautiful and dramatic - this red sky, black swans flying mutinously, dim sun, graphically it reminds me of Malevich in its geometric perfection.

What has the 'Water Music' to do with lounging about in a punt?

Quite a lot, it was composed to be played from a barge for people leisurely boating on a park pond. Read some musical history.

AmonRa you failed to actually look at Vaan's linked picture, it is NOT historically accurate (see picture)

Water Music was composed to serenade King George I of England during a boating party on the Thames river in 1717, the musicians were playing on barges.

Now look at the picture of the Sony SACD I linked in post 146 for a historically accurate picture.

Oh, they should have used a photo from 1717, then. My mistake.

If you want to call the Thames a 'pond'.

I am perfectly aware of the history of the piece. The Naive cover is just trying to be clever and fails in my opinion.

Well, if they have a recording from the year 1717 they certainly should also use a photo form the same year, methinks.

I agree.
Seems to be that Vaan has succeeded in making this "dreadful cover" a famous one.
Someone said publicity is always good, no matter how bad it might be.

Dear Vaan,

' ... and that leaves an enormous amount of music on this album that has absolutely nothing to do with swans.'

Do you also think that a cover for let's say a collection of Beethoven Overtures shouldn't be using a painting depicting Egmont or Prometheus, or a picture of Athenian ruins, because it would leave an enormous amount of music on the album that has nothing to do with the cover image?

'As it happens I often comment on the covers of the discs I review, more so when I like them actually. For me it is an integral part of the product, as I mentioned in an earlier post. A year ago I published in my "Best of the year list" a cover picture that I found to be a work of genius. ...'

I'm not a genius, thus I don't have any ambitions to create covers which are 'works of genius'. Quite many seem to like this Sibelius cover, which is enough to make me happy. Pleasing everyone is, in my opinion, unrealistic and a rather boring artistic objective.

I'm still looking forward to seeing your alternative cover design. Considering that it would be 'No problem whatsoever. Easiest thing in the world' to make a better cover it shouldn't take you much time and effort, should it?

David

It seems that following current practices, the standards for "genius" have been somewhat lowered on SA-CD.net as well.

Sibelius, most certainly. But cover designers? C'mon...

I found David's post "genial". His words are fantastic. That's all. Of course, I was not using "genius" in the same sense as we apply to the great composers we love.

Well, all I can say is that if you folks find the need to spend 6 pages on a thread criticizing the cover, than the recording and performance must be beyond reproach! Mine is on the way and I am eager to listen to it!
