So, it finally arrived and I urge you all to get it. We all know this Beethoven 4th is an unsurpassed performance. Even Carlos was 1000% satisfied and thrilled with it.

A quick comparison with the RBCD from the late 80s, shows that KING in Japan did a wonderful job to ameliorate this recording. While the RBCD can sound dry and one dimensional, the SACD (single layer) provides life, smoothness and 3d-stage sound (to the extent possible with this recording of course). For these reasons, we can get deeper to Carlos Kleiber's approach and understanding of this masterpiece. It is simply amazing. No words to describe it. I listened to it three time already. Congratulations!

Alex.-

PS: I wonder why this SACD is not yet in SA-CD.net's database...

A guess at why it's not listed (yet) - see /showthread/79494/79494/y#79494. If you wander over to http://www.orfeo-international.de/pages/kleiber_i6498_e.html , you'll see there is no information at all about this disc that hints at it being SACD instead of RBCD. Even Richard Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier - Carlos Kleiber is no longer claimed to be SACD (presumably sold out and now only printing RBCD copies).

Providing one is happy with an out-of-date, inaccurate set of parts being used and - as practically all scholars & most performers would recognise - an inappropriate scale and style of music making, then "yes".

There is no doubt though that for old-school Beethoven, Klieber (along with at least one other 'K') was hard to beat...

I can be and I am very happy with Carlos Kleiber, Gardiner or Chailly for various and different reasons. However, the common factor of the exellence in music making is inspiration, at least for me. And C. Kleiber was very inspired and inspiring that particular evening. Despite the inaccurate out of date set of parts used; I cannot care less.

This SACD seems as solely a KING Japan release, under the ORFEO logo. So, this is why that it is not included in the ORFEO catalogue. I guess.

My guess is that King had to include the prominent Orfeo logo, otherwise japanese collectors would have boycotted this release, because it is not faithful to the original ;-)
