Well here is my experience. My Onkyo DV-SP502 universal player (now replaced by an Oppo BDP-95 but still in my rack) used to have this failure, all of a sudden the player only detected the CD layer of some of my hybrid SACD's (Kraftwerk's M.M and Peter Gabriel's Up to be specific). Sometimes it was fixed just with eject and reinsert the disc to be recognized as SACD. But after some days of use, it definately stoped recognizing any SACD layer of these discs. I decided to open it and clean the lens with a cotton swab moistened with alcohol, and used the other tip to dry it. Bingo! I inserted all the hybrid SACD's that failed before and they were detected as hybrid discs reading the stereo and multichannel layers perfect.
I gave this "mantainance" to my player for 6 years (almost every 6 months) with no side effects or damages. My room has a carpet and dust is always there, that's why a did all this so often, of course I always did it with extreme care, I'm still using it with no problems.
I hope this helps =)

Well Barbazul (& stvnharr): Thanks so much for your responses; I was looking for complexity when a simple answer was the solution...

I cleaned the lens with alcohol and a q-tip and then no SACD layers were being recognized; after two more cleanings and a thorough dry, still no joy. I then liberally sprayed the entire lens mechanism with residue-free contact cleaner and (after a few load attempts), the SACD layer on the suspect disc was recognized again! I tested other discs and they all seem to work fine now.

My new house does have carpet where the CD player is, whereas the old house had wood floors - I guess the extra dust does creep in. I'll be sure to schedule regular cleanings.

Thanks to all who replied - these boards are very helpful. Now to turn off Steely Dan...

Update #2: I may have celebrated a bit prematurely...after a few power cycles, the player is back to not recognizing the SACD layer of hybrid discs. Additional web searches reveal that the pickup on this model is quite prone to failure - some users are on their third unit. The general advice is to avoid wasting time with repairs - it was a cheap unit to begin with.

So, I walked a block to the local Oppo dealer and picked up a BDP-93 (sigh).

Thanks again to everyone for their input.
