Update #2: I may have celebrated a bit prematurely...after a few power cycles, the player is back to not recognizing the SACD layer of hybrid discs. Additional web searches reveal that the pickup on this model is quite prone to failure - some users are on their third unit. Well Barbazul (& stvnharr): Thanks so much for your responses; I was looking for complexity when a simple answer was the solution... I cleaned the lens with alcohol and a q-tip and then no SACD layers were being recognized; after two more cleanings and a thorough dry, still no joy. Good idea; I've blown off the lens with air, but usually hesitate to give it a clean unless it looks dirty. I have a lens cleaner disc and will give it a shot. Thanks zeus; I appreciate the suggestion. There's a service menu that's accessible on the player (hold menu and select when powering up). There are a bevy of tests and calibration options (including auto-realignment), but not one of them seems to have made a difference with this particular disc. You are right; I'm grasping a bit before I walk down to the local shop and drop $499 on a new Oppo! I used to own a really good single-disc Sony (can't recall the model) that succumb to incessant skipping (out of warranty, of course). Still, the manufacturers have to master the discs with software, and usually the software isn't tested against all ... more |
