Discussion: Beethoven: String Trios Op. 9 - Trio Zimmermann

Another fabulous disc from this group -- music that's bursting with invention and personality given performances of immense verve and polish. Even old-timers like myself who are forever invoking our Grumiaux LPs will get great satisfaction from these performances. Don't be put off by the relative obscurity of these pieces -- if you like the op. 18 quartets or the first two piano concertos, you'll enjoy these. Give the first movement of op. 9/3 a try and see what I mean. This disc also demonstrates yet again what a boon hi-rez digital is to chamber music.

The Stereophile columnist John Marks has been courting notoriety lately by telling people that Beethoven's less well-known pieces aren't worth the trouble. This disc should be a further embarrassment to him.

Thank you, BIS, and more please!

I have their Mozart: Mozart: Divertimento K.563 - Trio Zimmermann, and it is wonderful.

Thank you for the recommendation, and yes I do have and enjoy the Grumaiux on vinyl.

krisjan, in his very insightful review, mentions that the second trio might have been recorded at higher resolution than the others. I have downloaded the 24 FLACs and, according to my dac, all tracks are 88.2 khz.

Thanks for confirming Enrique. I was going by what I heard - it must be due entirley to venue differences.

I commented (a few weeks ago) on the BIS thread that I thought this disc SOUNDS absolutely fabulous, ... so thought I would check its spectrum plot too with my new software toolkit ...

SOUNDS SUPER ... and impeccable plots too :) Delightful BIS !

P.S. See also the equally super Mozart disc:

Mozart: Divertimento K.563 - Trio Zimmermann

I have the Mozart disc by this trio - wonderful presence of sound. May have to investigate this one too. I usually find LVB a but too boisterous for my tastes, but I do like small scale works...

Simply put: a PERFECT disc.

I've been listening to this disc with pleasure for several evenings. This evening I followed it with Beethoven: String Trios Op. 8, Op. 9 Nos. 1 & 3 - Beethoven String Trio -- a very different sound. Acoustically, this disc is juicy with overtones, whereas the Praga disc is clear and spare.

--But the Praga disc is not without merit; the inclusion of Op. 8 is very interesting, and I hear a trade-off between warmth and spatial clarity. Geohominid's review of this BIS disc states that "the position of each player accurately recreated", but the positions are much easier to discern on the Praga disc. This is to some degree due to the geometry of the players, with the BIS musicians placed 'quartet-style' (violin-viola-cello) and the Praga musicians centred on the cello (violin-cello-viola). The viola is always a challenge to hear*, its placement in the back on the BIS disc is an additional handicap and its high tones merge with those of the violin to the right and its low tones with the cello to the left. The Praga cellist anchors the sound in his centre position, and the violin and viola frequently produce delightful echo effects from the far left and far right.

The Praga disc omits Op. 9 no. 2, but its inclusion of Op. 8 reveals a Beethoven not otherwise encountered on SACD. For details: /showthread/82939//y?page=first.

*It is too small for its frequency-range; the larger viola da gamba is properly sized.

I ordered the Beethoven disc first, to determine whether the Zimmermanns were to my taste, but as soon as I listened to it I ordered Mozart: Divertimento K.563 - Trio Zimmermann. The title and references above to "Mozart disc" are only half-right: it is a "Mozart / Schubert disc":

Mozart: Divertimento in E flat major K.563
Schubert: String Trio in B flat major D.471
