How does the Analogue Productions version of this title compare sonically with the single-layer and hybrid JSACD versions?

Looks like single-layer has the edge as to number of tracks, with its inclusion of two alternate takes.

I have both the AP SACD and the single layer JSACD. I didn't do an in depth comparison when I received the AP, but the sonic differences seemed extremely small to me. I only played the stereo layer of the AP SACD.

The JSACD sounds a bit thin and bright, especially with Miles' muted trumped, and I expected the AP SACD to sound warmer, but it's really the same, so I guess that's how the tapes sound.

I've just posted a new review, to counterbalance the calculated provocation that someone anonymously deposited on the site earlier today.

My system is likely not as revealing (nor my hearing as acute) as Claude's, but I do think the sound quality on this SACD is very good and representative of Columbia's engineering ca. 1961.

An "anonymous" 'review' or an irritant?

AP's mch version is spectacular......hardly brittle.

Agree with you, Untertone. AP's jazz (and Pop) releases are definitive (until some miraculous DSD>SACD conversion surpasses it in the distant future).

Good idea, everyone else needs to counterbalance all my negative reviews with positive fluff.

The stereo portion is remixed and sounds nothing like the original 2 ch mix. Same goes for the AP/Seven Steps to Heaven. I've not heard the 3 ch.

The MFSL CD from the 80's is long OOP but uses the original mix and sounds more natural without a pathetic attempt to recreate/modernize a work of art.

A lot of these older masters were three channel and then mixed to two, so there's no question when you do hear them in three channel they don't sound "odd!"

You'll probably pooh pooh this release, but Monster Music recently remixed the original Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain THREE channel masters and did a DTS 5.1 mix and although I have SOS on two previous Sony and Japanese SACD transfers, the 5.1 (via my Meridian 800) is now my preferred version.

A Gimmick? To some, probably, but it does impart a feeling of being in the midst of the recording session as the rear channels are NOT overemphasized and Noel Lee (yeah, the HEAD Monster) followed the schematic of a photo from the original recording session to mix for 5.1.

Actually, quite cool and sadly, OOP! Bought my copy on e~bay.
