I was told that Ivan Fischer had people seated in the theatre whilst he rehearsed to check balances so I guess he was happy seating the horns amongst the cellos which I thought rather lost them. I would have suggested they were seated on the raised platform where half the cellos were. His usual placing of the woodwind amongst the strings for the concerto worked really well.

Mixed feelings clearly but hope you enjoyed it as much as the RFH crowd.

I've grown to be rather fond of Ivan's mix and match approach to music making, which makes for some unusual sounding interpretations. For our concert he mixed the woodwind in with the strings, higher strings with flute, clarinets and lower with oboe, bassoon etc. Produced some exciting sounds that may or may not have accorded with the composer's conceptions. Maybe these idiosyncrasies are the key to his appeal?

And in a week, I have two new ensembles presenting their first releases with Channel that I am very happy about.
So thanks for your continued support and interest in our artists

If one of these new ensembles is Philippens & Nieuwkerk (Rhapsody) I have to say this something to be happy about. I bought the 2-channel DSD download about a week ago, converted it to PCM with Audiogate, and cannot stop listening to it. I think I listened to at least 4 times. Great music and just seems like the two artist are having a great time playing it.

Actually I did enjoy it very much and my partner thought it was a knock out.

I am just a bit worried that the idiosyncrasies are beginning of get out of hand.

The review of the Brahms, in Birmingham, in today's Guardian from Andrew Clements sums up my feelings rather well:-

" Fischer's approach to the symphony was hard to characterize: whilst some sections had an unfussy directness and moved very purposefully, others, like the opening of the Andante, were unexpectedly measured - not so much to make the performance drag, but enough to make it less of a magnificently coherent whole."

I know what you mean; it could become a genuine concern. During that performance of the 'Pastoral' at the RFH two years ago we had the distinct impression that Ivan had his tongue very much in his cheek throughout so one was bound to ask to what aim? Trees on stage, little trills everywhere surely he was simply poking fun not searching out deeper meaning?

Maybe he believes it helps popularise classical music with younger audiences and let's be fair there are always plenty of them in his audiences. Passages in just about every piece he plays solicit smiles from even we older chaps; all of course entirely in keeping with Ivan's charisma and good humour.

The Canterbury audience was frighteningly old. I was concerned that some wouldn't make it up the stairs.

You are right the trees in the Pastoral were jokey and not necessary but there the performance worked as a whole.

He has always been eccentric over placement. I recall that in The Coronation of Poppea for Kent Opera he had three continuo groups arranged around the stage and skipped between them. Not something Norrington, his predecessor, would have bothered with.

Fischer is a better conductor than Norrington.

All the talk in the Kristallnacht thread is making me wonder if Channel has any plans to record Ivan Fischer's new one-act opera "The Red Heifer" which is getting extensive news coverage.

Just posted on the Channel Classics Facebook page is a link (below) to a glowing review of last night's performance of the Mahler 9 by Fischer and the BFO at the Concertgebouw. And for those of us who were wondering, it's also noted on Facebook that Channel recorded the Mahler last weekend!

Probably be a year before that one comes out--- The M5 was just released. What a review!

Jared was ecstatic during, and after the recording session. Hopefully it's sooner than a year away. Maybe he'll post the release date.

But there's a BFO Bruckner 7 yet to be released. Oh those Wagner tuba's. And a Brahms 4. Allot to look forward to.
