This is a very special performance of Ma Vlast, but the VERY best one was Kubelik's LAST with the Czech Philharmonic at the May Festival on SUPRAPHON. That recording done live, is nothing short of a miracle... The orchestra and audience actually breathe together... The sense of occasion is palpably on the RBCD...

FIND THAT ONE and save the 80 bucks that this one will cost... That one is about 20 bucks...

Although the Kubelik version with his own Bav RSO on Orfeo is probably a finer performance, and certainly better played and recorded.

It was top choice when Gramophone surveyed Ma Vlast a few years ago - I have both and do indeed prefer the interpretation on Orfeo.

Obviously the significance of the Supraphon's occasion gives it a special atmosphere.

Me, too. The Orfeo is ahead of the emotional one of 1990 as far as performances go. I have 5 of his Ma Vlast's and really prefer the Orfeo.

My one trip to Prague was that weekend. I was with my sister. I had the opportunity to go to that concert, but my sister didn't want to go and begged me not to leave her alone as she found the place rather intimidating. I've kicked myself ever since!

That is sad. A bit of history lost.

I played the LP version of this performance last night.
And while it is undoubtedly musically very fine,I really wonder how they are going to turn into anything really worthy of SACD release from an SQ point of view?
On my system it sounds like YET ANOTHER BAD DGG recording SQ wise.

As a comparison I played both the LP and the Pentatone SACD release of Colin Davis's Sibelius works also from Boston, and apart from a more limited dynamic range and some surface noise during ppp passages on the LP they both sounded very GOOD!
At times almost identical.

The DGG LPs on the other hand, weren't even anywhere close, to my only SACD version of Ma Vlast the excellent BIS recording from KL.
Smetana's wonderful score is richly orchestrated and needs a good recording to be enjoyed IMO. BIS provides both a very good recording and a good interpretation. DGG only a good interpretation, badly recorded IMO.
Looking forward to hear from those who bite, if the DGG masters are really that much better than the LPs in this case.

I now have this Kubelik Ma Vlast and listened last night via Stax headphones. The performance was enjoyable, and the sound quality was very fine, clear and airy with plenty of impact.

I also have the Pentatone Sibelius SACD of the Boston SO and the Smetana was at least as fine.

So, was it worth it to buy since we now have the Flor Malaysia PO release in modern sound?

I won't buy the Flor, though I've no doubt it is excellent. I'm more a collector of Boston SO recordings.

Whether Kubelik's interpretation is more idiomatic than Flor's, who knows (one might think so: he must have known the work better) - and one might also think the Boston SO had the edge over the Malaysian SO, but the playing on both is probably superb.

I suspect BIS has the edge on sonic grounds (also multichannel, of course), but I'd be reluctant to describe the DG as not modern.

I just wish Universal would reissue the Boston SO/Abbado Debussy Nocturnes on SACD.

Compared to Kubelik's Bavarian Radio Symphony version, which is considered his best by many, Flor seems a bit over the top, but that is not a bad thing. Solti maintained that the lack of visual conductor-audience rapport that exists in live performance requires that recorded performances must add a bit of extra pizazz.
