By chance I started talking to a man in a local CD store a few weeks ago about music gear, and learned he had in the past year spent over $7000 for a particular top of the line CD player. From my own experience in looking at higher end CD players a few years ago, it seemed to me there was very much a set of diminishing audio quality returns for spending more than $2000 on a CD only machine. I brought up my own very positive experiences with SACD, and told him in my 30 years of listening to both vinyl and CD it was by far the biggest improvement in sound quality I had ever heard, and that I no longer listened to how music was produced, I just listened to the music. Even though he was obviously an audiophile, it just seemed that he didn't want to hear about it, even though the manufacturer of that particular CD player he had also now made a very high end SACD player. I'm not sure it was that he already invested so much money that he couldn't bring himself to believe there would be something better (and potentially for much less money), or that he just had heard so many exaggerated claims and new 'standards' over the years (for me HDCD was very underwhelming) that to him SACD was just another fad to soon pass like DCC.

The short of it, I do whatever I can to evangelize for SACD so that it doesn't go the way of DCC...

I also have a rather high priced CD/SA-CD Player, but the philosophie of the brand i use makes more sense to me. They have CD players at different prices, each one that is more expensive is allways clearly better sonically than the next cheaper model (more money is allways more sound, not more gimmicks)the players towards the top of the range offer SA-CD playback in addition, still every one of them is also a better CD player than the cheaper models, even if those are CD only.
This way i could buy a new player during the early stages of SA-CD, withought having to fear what would happen to SA-CD, because i had bought a considerably better CD player at the same time.

Philip,
There's no shortage of available sa-cd players. However, there may be difficulties with their availability in your area. I'm not all that surprised that the dealers you visited didn't really want your money. The general public, and audio dealers too, basically just can't be bothered with sa-cd as they all think rbcd is tops and the only thing for music.
Surely you should be able to find a Marantz or Sony player somewhere that will fit your budget.

You should be able to find a good SACD player in the UK.I had a friend bring over to Sydney a SONY XB780. I think it cost about 400 pounds. I have no problem with it whatsoever. Good hunting

I recenlty picked up the basic Sony XE SCD-597, and have been very pleased with it, both for SACD and CD playback. It was only £100! Very smooth, warm and detailed sound, easy to use.

Good luck
