Apologies for not being more specific. When you look into the booklets of the SACD's you should be able to find information about the DSD converters used in the SACD mastering, Julia Fischer's SACD - Meitner A/D?, RCA living stereo SACD - dCS. Both converters are already obsoleted by non-bright, natural sounding Grimm AD1. Before you try changing your hardware, I would recommend listening to any SACDs recorded with the Grimm converter first. I would prescribe these two SACD's Nat "King" Cole: Love Is The Thing Nat "King" Cole: The Very Thought of You

Thank you for your helpful clarification. In checking the booklets I can confirm that you are indeed correct about the DSD converters used on both albums: RCA lists the dCS, and Julia Fischer recording has the Meitner. I don't think I've listened to anything with the Grimm converter yet, but will pay more attention from now on, based upon your recommendation. I did just notice, however, that there is a very extended--and at times, heated--discussion of these issues on the PentaTone thread in the forum archives, and as a newbie, I can assure you that I will not be weighing in anytime soon :)

I would like to know the name of these awesome speakers !

ME-Geithain; check the link in my profile. They're really something; ingenious East German engineering from behind the Iron Curtain... Now a German radio station/studio favorite.

"Post by Disbeliever Today 12:49 pm (31 of 32)Are your speakers extremely bright? They could be overly so, perhaps? Possibly they are the overbright B & W 's both the metakl dome & diamonds I find are too bright and can cause listening fatigue"

My speakers are Paradigm Studio 10s.

"Post by audioholik Today 04:02 pm It might be a severe case of Meitner allergy. Have you tried any SACDs recorded with other A/D converters? Is the fatigue problem still present when you are listening to, let's say, new AP Nat King Cole SACDs?"

I'm such a newbie that I don't quite understand the question. I haven't looked at the recording or studio process that closely. Sum total of SACDs I listened to were: Pink Floyd DSOFTM; Beethoven's 9th by Haitink; Fritz Steiner's Rimsky-Korsakov for RCA; and then yesterday, the Julia Fischer Russian Violin Concertos, which might have been the only one recorded in DSD.

1 had a multichannel system consisting of Studio 10s and PW-2200 subwoofer 10 years ago. All of them in one area became fatiguing after a few months, so I sold them.

Now using KEF iQ10's. Excellent speakers. No listener fatigue at all with them, even after several hours.

I suggest your speakers are the problem here.

Take a look and listen at PMC speakers also. I have been more than satisfied with my PMC IB2S transmission line monitors. Extremely accurate and non-fatiquing. Large PMC systems have been installed in great many mastering studios during the last years, often replacing B&W 800 series.

I have no doubt that Geithains are great, other professional quality monitors worth considering would be ATC and Lipinski.

Seconded; those are all very good (except I know nothing about Lipinski). Pro units in general tend to be the "best buys," and they never compromise in sound quality. You'll never look back.

And that quality is usually the same in the big and the small models. The small models just don't have the dynamics or the bass extension that their bigger brothers have (understandably so), but the sound characteristics are as a rule basically the same.

Not all of them have representatives around the world, but if interested contact their customer service or sales people. They often do direct sales (which cuts down on costs further still).

I'm not in Germany myself btw.

For example PMC uses the same midrange driver and tweeter in all of their bigger line of monitors, of which my IB2S is the smallest. The only difference is the size and number of woofers, form single 10" to double 15", so they all sound the same exept that the bigger ones play louder with deeper bass.

I recently had a home dem. PMC Fact 8 £4600) compared to my now sold 17 year old TLS speakers and the PMC's were lacking in musical involvement I did not like them at all . Only today I have discovered an excellent sounding TLS speakers called Aurousal VSx, cost only £1650 and with my own amplifier from memory, they sounded as good as the IMO overpriced £17.500 Vivid speakers that I auditioned last Saturday. Both brands use metal drivers the Aurousal tweeter has a volume control at the back and can even be switched off completely .A key feature is the use of a tuned port-loaded transmission line with 'strategically placed internal baffles & damping similar to PMC. Power handling 250 W & sensitivity 89dB The Aurousal speaker review will appear in September Hi-Fi News & RR. My new Aurousal speakers arrive on Friday they are incredible good value and very good looking. Fortunately I cancelled the B & W 804 Diamonds just in time.
