Okko Kamu is a highly underrated conductor. Are there plans for any more Sibelius from him, Robert?

He and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra are going to record the Sibelius Symphony Cycle for BIS:

(It's interesting that we'll get two Sibelius Cycles -- the other one is Vänskä/Minnesota -- from BIS in the near future. Though, my guess is that the Kamu/Lahti set won't be on SACD.)

Ah, but you guessed wrong. Of course it will.

Thanks, Robert! I'm more than happy to be wrong in this case. ;)

Wow - my one and only exposure to Kamu was in, I believe, 1972, when he appeared with the SF Symphony right after winning the first von Karajan conducting contest, and he performed the Sibelius 2nd. He received good notices as I recall, but I don't believe he has ever returned. If you recall, he was the conductor for symphonies 1,2,3 in the DG box set of the Sibelius symphonies, with HvK doing 4-7 - always thought that was a bit odd, since von Karajan had at least the 2nd in his repertoire - I had the EMI LP of him conducting the Philharmonia, I believe. Kamu obviously has had a distinguished career since so this is a very interesting move.

As a further aside - the second winner of the HvK conducting contest was Gabriel Chmura (I think) - who guest conducted the following year, accompanying Rudolf Serkin in Beethoven's 3rd and 5th piano concertos....in my opinion, this was one of the worst-conducted performances I have heard (although Serkin received the usual obligatory standing ovation), and I don't believe Chmura has had as distinguished career as Kamu.

Postscript - this is not meant to be about Gabriel Chmura - but I Googled him after writing the above, and see that he has been very active over his career and one could describe his career as distinguished. Maybe I caught him on a off-night. (Having said that, I also caught Rattle when he was 24 and MTT when he was 27, and their talent was obvious even then).

"The new edition of the complete symphonies is to be released as a set on the 150th anniversary of Sibelius’s birth in 2015."
So I guess it will be a SACD boxset, good news. Can save some space in shelf at least. But 2015..it will take another four years?

I have a number of his live recordings from a Japanese label of the Helsinki PO. It is some of the best I have ever heard.

See here for just one of the recordings:

I think the rest that he did are now out of print.

What I'd really like to see is an SACD of the complete Lemminkainen Legends. Is this also going to be on SACD, Robert?

No, it isn't. He has quite a respectable discography with us and elsewhere.
