In this case, I wouldn't focus too much on hi-rez, because for these vintage recordings, which sound very poor compared to current standards, the mastering quality is much more important than the resolution of the format.

I cant offer any comparisons as i only own the 2002 ABKO version which has a great stereo full sound !

highly recommended.......

and just think 8 years ago you could pick this up for about $ 10.00 US at any record store !

:)

The DSD-mastered CD is still available at that price.

HDTracks is saying they plan to release this as a HD FLAC download (likely 24/88 and 24/176) this spring/summer, as well.

According to an ad in the latest Stereophile which dropped through my letterbox today, they're already on HD Tracks.

I had read about this, but it doesn't appeal; possibly it's my age (53), but I still like to receive a physical object (with real artwork!) in exchange for my music cash - I guess it's a hang-over from the LP days:-)

All the best

David

David, that makes sense; I prefer a physical object as well, and I'm only a few years older than half your age. And...to play high-resolution FLAC you need a player while can handle the files and a receiver which supports HDMI 1.1 or higher (the Oppo BDP-93 can do this, but other Oppo players, and most other media players generally, can't).

That said, it's hard to argue with the cost efficiency/quality balance if you have that hardware, now that the regular SACDs are OOP.

Good news!

I've just picked up the 2002 Hybrid for £10 on Ebay! Now all I need to do is come up with a convincing explanation to give my wife about why two copies of the same recording (one with that suspiciously expensive looking Japanese writing all over it) will be arriving shortly:-)

Re the prices of these SACDs nowadays - I get the impression a lot of people have gone through my experience; bought a Blu-ray player for HD video and then found "Gosh, it plays SACDs too!" tried out a cheap recording ('Honky Chateau' in my case), marvelled at the sonics and multi-channel splendidness and thought "Wow, I must rush out and buy as many of these little beauties as possible!", only to find that all the ones you'd always fancied ('Tubular Bells', 'Ziggy Stardust', 'Avalon' etc.) have been deleted and there's 500 people like you after every copy:-)

I have to admit that 'the SACD experience' has got me listening to music in hi-fi again in a way I haven't done for years - sat down on the sofa with a cup of coffee or suchlike and playing albums through from start to finish and revelling in the big sound of it all:-)

It's playing havoc with my bank balance though!

All the best

David

The SHM-SACD version that just came out is "the bomb"!

Hands down, feet down!

Best thing I ever heard!

According to CDJapan, the SHM~SACD remaster is sourced from the 2002 DSD ABKCO master, the same used for the original SACDs.

ABKCO has also announced that they may repress all of these SACDs at realistic prices.

Of course, 2010 remastering equipment and the SHM compound might contribute to the bump in sound.

I have the 2002 SACD and feel no need to upgrade although I have been very well pleased with the 18 SHM~SACDs in my collection.
