Thanks for this.
I must admit, I was aware of this, but had not included because of extremely contentious reviews in US and Germany. What on earth have they done to deserve these? (re-orchestrated for bongo drums, kazoo and electric guitar, perhaps? Bach can handle most things, but there are limits...)
Haha, no, flute, 2 violins, cello, and harpsichord. Can you point me to one of the nasty reviews? I can't seem to find any. (For the record, there might be a tiny flash of iffy intonation here and there, but these are very "live" sounding performances.) I'm very curious to see what the issues are for these critics.

Steve, Period instruments are another topic entirely; shall we start a thread? I'm home now, taking a census of what Haydn quartets we have on SACD -- and by implication, what pieces of the oeuvre are sadly missing.
On various instruments and with varying musicianship, we have the following issues:
Haydn: String Quartets Op. 9 No. 4 & Op. 77 No. 2 - Fry Street Quartet Haydn: String Quartets Op. 20 - Pellegrini Quartett Haydn: String Quartets - Amsterdam String Quartet Haydn: String Quartets Op. 33 Nos. 1, 6 & 4, Op. 42 - Parkanyi Quartet Haydn: String Quartets Op. 33 Nos. 2, 3 & 5 - Parkanyi Quartet Haydn: String Quartets Vol. 1 - Leipziger Streichquartett Haydn: String Quartets Op. 50 Nos. 3, 5 & 6 - Prazak Quartet Prazak Quartet in Concert Haydn: String Quartets Op. 54 - Parkanyi Quartet Haydn, Bacewicz, Dvorak: String Quartets - Szymanowski Quartet Haydn: String Quartets Vol. 2 - The Amsterdam String Quartet Haydn: Seven Last Words - Savall Haydn: String Quartets Op. 74 - Kocian Quartet Fandango - Carmina Quartet, Rolf Lislevand, Nina Corti Haydn: Famous String Quartets - Gewandhaus-Quartett Haydn: String Quartets Nos. 1, 63 & 77 - Royal Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble Haydn, Beethoven: String Quartets - Quartetto Italiano Haydn, Solberg, Grieg: String Quartets - Engegård Quartet
...with the following works (number of recordings in parentheses):
(1) Op. 1 no.1 Hob.III:1 (1) Op. 9 no.4 Hob.III:22 (1) Op. 20 no.2 Hob.III:32 (2) Op. 20 no.3 Hob.III:33 (1) Op. 20 no.4 Hob.III:34 (1) Op. 20 no.5 Hob.III:35 (1) Op. 3 no.5 Hob.III:17 (1) Op. 33 no.1 Hob.III:37 (1) Op. 33 no.2 Hob.III:38 (1) Op. 33 no.3 Hob.III:39 (1) Op. 33 no.4 Hob.III:40 (1) Op. 33 no.5 Hob.III:41 (1) Op. 33 no.6 Hob.III:42 (1) Op. 42 Hob.III:43 (1) Op. 50 no.3 Hob.III:46 (1) Op. 50 no.5 Hob.III:48 (2) Op. 50 no.6 Hob.III:49 (1) Op. 51 no.1 Hob.III:50 (1) Op. 54 no.1 Hob.III:57 (2) Op. 54 no.2 Hob.III:58 (1) Op. 54 no.3 Hob.III:59 (1) Op. 64 no.5 Hob.III:63 (1) Op. 64 no.6 Hob.III:64 (2) Op. 74 no.1 Hob.III:72 (1) Op. 74 no.2 Hob.III:73 (2) Op. 74 no.3 Hob.III:74 (1) Op. 76 no.1 Hob.III:75 (1) Op. 76 no.2 Hob.III:76 (3) Op. 76 no.3 Hob.III:77 (2) Op. 76 no.4 Hob.III:78 (1) Op. 76 no.5 Hob.III:79 (1) Op. 77 no.1 Hob.III:81 (1) Op. 77 no.2 Hob.III:82 (1) Op. 83 Hob.XX/2
By my reckoning, 45 works are missing:
Op. 1 nos. 2,3,4,5,6 Op. 2 nos. 1,2,3,4,5,6 Op. 3 nos. 1,2,3,4,5,6* Op. 9 nos. 1,2,3,5,6 Op. 17 nos. 1,2,3,4,5,6 Op. 20 nos. 1,6 Op. 50 nos. 1,2,4 Op. 55 nos. 1,2,3 Op. 64 nos. 1,2,3,4 Op. 71 nos. 1,2,3 Op. 76 no. 6 Op. 103
I would love to see a complete set by anyone (except Carmina and RPO). Between the Kocianovo, the Prazákovo and the Párkányí, Praga almost has a complete set. The best way to encourage new issues is obviously more purchases of the existing offerings.

Thanks for taking the time to do this excellent summary! Which of the "remaining" quartets would be the most important to get, do you think? (Aside from the fact that it would be nice to have the comlete cycle)

How about Bach's Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord BWV 1014-1019. I see that Channel Classics issued them on RBCD...any chance for SACD?

Ouch, what a question!
Instinct immediately runs to the later opp 71, 76, 77 -- then desire lurches back to the Op.20 "my first true quartets" -- and finally sentimentality takes control and looks longingly at the early opp. 1, 2 AND Hofstetter's lovely op. 3.
Were I a wealthy Viennese aristocrat (wrong on 3 counts), I would commission L'intégrale des quatuors from the Kuijken family.

Thank you for this Haydn quartet sac-discography. I very much enjoyed the two Amsterdam discs on Channel and am disappointed that the series appears to have stalled.
As for other gaps in this category, I crave to hear the Bach gamba sonatas in a really good recording. I see a listing for a horn arrangement, but it's not really the same thing.

I quite agree. Now, if the rest of you SACDers would please look at your collections -- and if you don't already own Haydn: String Quartets - Amsterdam String Quartet and Haydn: String Quartets Vol. 2 - The Amsterdam String Quartet, order them now. That will provide you with some quality listening, but also encourage The Amsterdam to go back to the studio and record Volume 3, 4, 5....
We really can't expect labels to provide the recordings we wishfully list here, if we don't respond to their existing catalogue by rewarding excellence with purchases.
Bruce, I don't see these in YOUR library....

It's a pity ASV disappeared and only released the Lindsay's in Beethoven's Opp 130 and 133 on SACD (which I have and marvellous it is) as the quartet's Haydn would have been superb on hi-rez.
