Adam Fischer again proves he is a consummate conductor of Mozart's music. Unfortunately, after an exciting beginning, the second half of this Idomeneo really begins to lag, mostly because of the singers. Electra's final aria -- the last aria of the opera -- is electrifying. However, Rafaella Milanesi really disappoints. Towards the end of the aria there is a difficult passage where Mozart has the crazed Electra issue mad laughter -- a great effect when done right -- but Ms. Milanesi just can't handle it; her voice gives out. What really salvages this set is the orchestra. The overture is gorgeous, and so is the ballet music on disc four.
