I don't think we tell that - there are no RNO discs at all but from memory I think they're re-sorting allocations following the death of 2 of the Shostakovich roster of conductors. I'm sure that has implications on things.

In the latest newsletter Giel says Pentatone are trying to convince Pletnev to record Manfred (if you can believe that you would have to!?!) to complete the Tchakovsky symphony series, after hearing his Shostakovich I'm sure Vladimir Jurovski would be great...

If you remember, we promoted that discussion in correspondence with Pentatone, at one stage Pletnev was very much against the idea but he has "come around" since and obviously customer demand helps.

That doesn't guarantee it will happen but we were led to believe there would be a very good chance of a recording in 2013 probably then for release in 2014.

There is more than enough room in the catalogue for a really good DSD "Manfred", it is by far Tchaikovsky's most cerebral work and strangely the one most often neglected. Macal on Exton is OK-ish but not a performance that you would want to sit through every day; Jurowski does a brilliant job with the LPO but alas only on RB these days.

Jurowski debuted with the Boston SO this fall, and got ecstatic reviews for his Shostakovich 4 with the orchestra. He's at or near the top of a lot of wish lists for Levine's successor as music director.

No doubt some of it has to do with the fact that it's not as economically scored as his other symphonies -- you have to bring in cornets, harps, organist, an extra woodwind or two, etc.

A lot of orchestras can only afford to do several big works a season, and Mahler symphony will have better sales.

Hi !

Jurowski is certainly a fine conductor, but I thought that of Deneve whom we heard last weekend. Also Adès did a very fine job. But my wife and I were especially impressed with the Frenchman, despite his looking somewhat like a human version of a notorious character from "Wind in the Willows".

Neither the disc itself nor the listing here on sa-cd.net sheds any light on whether this is native DSD or hirez pcm, but if anyone's expecting a better Manfred than this from Pletnev I wish them luck: Tchaikovsky: Manfred Symphony - Kitajenko

I wondered about that. She is a fine artist. Does PentaTone have limited resources and cannot run more than 3 pianists in one year? I will say that if I had to make cuts I would try really hard to keep Mari Kodama, Martin Helmchen and Nareh Arghamanyan
