They are the very same recordings. Recording venues: Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, 4/1973 (Chopin),5/1974 (Schumann)

Best,Pentaman

For some reason I thought the Nocturnes were being released - is that one in the works?

I have Arrau's Etudes (on EMI) and the Nocturnes (on Phillips) - both are excellent. Arrau was a superb interpreter of Chopin.

My name is flyingdutchman. That's all you need to know. I have not changed my handle since coming here.

Arrau Chopin/Schumann.
The 24 preludes were considered representative enough of the pianist to be included in the 3 double CD sets devoted to him in the Philips Great Pianists series. They tend to be on the slowish side, but I prefer them to the DG set played by Pollini which came out about the same time, because Arrau's rubato in the more reflective numbers appeared more idiomatic than Pollini.

A friend gave me some old Grannyphone issues from the late 70s. The June 1978 issue reviews the Schumann. The LP also includes Opp 15, 19 and 28 : "Papillons… could also only have come from Arrau in its depth of sonority and feeling, with tempo sometimes a little more leisurely than we often hear to accommodate the con amore approach. I was now and again puzzled by his decision about repeats- or perhaps they come from some new edition? For instance, we often hear the main section of No 2 played twice in order to include the textual variant that Schumann himself is said to have sometimes played in bars 9 and 10. But I can't remember ever having heard the four-bar introduction repeated too. Nor, surely, is it usual to repeat the second half of No 11? Yet Arrau does not repeat the first eight bars of No 5, which I think is a loss since it robs him of the chance of observing Schumann's basso cantando the second time."

That is Joan Chissell's review of one of the four items on the LP. Pity Grannyphone has now gone into hors d'oeuvres for reviews rather than the main course.

PS. I've replayed my recording of Arrau. Referring to the periodic table of elements, if Argerich's astonishing recording of the Chopin preludes is silvery and mercurial, Arrau is gold, with a little bit of lead. Maestro Helfgott's thallium and polonium is completely avoided.

Excellent comments, Ramesh. This is the information I was looking for. I only have Sokolov's recordins on opus 111, and he is like a bull in a china cabinet.

Anyone know what the story is on the new PentaTone Nutcracker scheduled for release in October? Will it be released in time for Christmas in the U.S.?

I see it listed on their site today. Don't know about availability in the U.S.

Pentaman said (post 332) that we should get it in January.

Question for Pentaman: will the Release Planning on your web site be continued? As you can tell from this thread, your follwers are devoted, and wait with keen anticipation even the slightest tidbit of news! My heart nearly gave out when someone spoke of Prokofiev Symphonies. Is there (please, please say "yes") something in the works, maybe with the RNO, maybe(hopefully) with Jurowski?
Thanks,
Bret
