This is getting interesting! A flagship ESS Sabre32 9018 DAC, XLR outputs, linear PSU... This could be my next player instead of the unobtainium SCD-XA5400ES. If the price is below $1500, I'm definitely in. Hopefully the region hack will be available even with this model.

I bought a 983H some years ago and the picture is great. But the sound is, well, what you'd expect for a €300 player. No better, no worse. The remote is dreadful (both design, and the fact that it must be pointed absolutely in the right direction for it to work).
As a one-box solution it looks great, but I'm still not convinced by players that do everything.
Glad I managed to pick up one of the last of the Sonys (though they seem to still be available here according to the German Sony website).

It seems that OPPO has been pushing the envelope with each succeeding unit and the BDP~95 is no exception....so much so, that redesigned from the floor up that the 93 cannot be retrofitted for all the many improvements.
I have been using the NuForce OPPO and all I can say that it plays EVERY disc I've ever thrown at it including the RBCD side of a dualdisc (which my Meridian 800 will NOT play). SACD and DVD~A playback and especially Blu~ray/DVD upsampling are simply stunning.
I look forward to the BDP~95 with a keen eye as its under $1,000 price tag MIGHT even give the Sony 5400 a run for its money. And it does SO MUCH MORE than the Sony.

This is a very exciting machine, I agree.
I've just got the Cambridge Audio BD650 yesterday and it seems very competant with all formats, although I've not played many RBCDs yet. Just enjoying my SACDs and DVD-As mainly. With all these great Oppo players about, what do people think of Denon and Marantz's offerings such as DBP4010UD and UD8004?
Do they compete with Oppo/Cambridge or are they off the pace nowadays?

I am hoping to read some comparison of the new Denon DBP-2012UDCI with the Oppo BDP-95 once they are both available in the new year.
They look like they will be very similar, and probably close to each other in their prices as well. I like the two HDMI out's, the upgraded Dac's, and stereo XLR's of the Oppo, so the Denon has to really step up. I don't think there are any other players out there right now that offers these things like the Oppo and at the announced release price.
I expect that one of these two will be my next universal player unless someone like Sony brings out a new and very competitive player very soon.

Really thinking about the Oppo BDP-95 or even an 83SE (Oppo is again offering the SE upgrade if you mail in your standard 83). But since I listen to music only on headphones I'm not sure the upgrade is worth it. Any headphone people out there do a similar upgrade? I have a pair of Sennheiser HD650 headphones, which aren't bad but of course you can't compare them to high quality speakers. It's the difference between listening only with your ears as opposed to your entire body. I'm not sure the upgrade would be noticeable on headphones. I listen to music mostly at night and would keep people up if I didn't use headphones, so speakers are not an option. The 95 looks like it will be a major piece of equipment though.

On the contrary! Good headphones have many advantages over speakers. They're usually more detailed and don't smudge the sound like a listening room does.
In fact, if you only listen to headphones, I'd say that was one of the best justifications for buying a superior player - because you'll hear more of an upgrade than if you used speakers.
I've been toying with the idea of a STAX-only system fed by a really top of the range SACD player (eg. EMM Labs, dCS, Esoteric etc) and I know of some people who already own a setup like this and won't go back to speakers.
Seriously, get the new player - every improvement will be magnified by the Sennheiser HD650 (I used to own a pair too!) :)
