Not sure if this has been posted, but I heard something briefly on the radio today about the introduction of surround sound radio!

Another fad or a shot in the arm for M/C SACD?

There are some broadcasting stations featuring classical surround sound programmes in Germany. Leading the way is the Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Radio). This explains why their new label produces multi-channel SACDs.

German public broadcasting services (Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandradio, WDR, MDR) have supported a number of multi-channel projects for harmonia mundi, querstand, tudor, Profil, Capriccio, Avie, audite and others.

Does one need a decoder to process the multichannel sound or is it Prologic II?

BBC experimented with radio back in the 1970s on back of quad disc fiasco, they actually broadcast some plays as well I seem to remember them as being very effective from both the point of ambience and effects (Look out He's behind you) Think they used differing matrix systems as well as experimenting with using two transmitters for 4 channels. I used a JVC quad tuner at that time hope this won't fizz out like the orginal 1970's broadcasts

This is what the Dutch classical radio station says (on Facebook):

"Radio4 is a classical music radio station that belongs to the Publieke Omroep (Dutch Public Broadcasting Companies).

Since January 2008 Radio4 (www.radio4.nl) has been broadcasting several concerts in surround. In oktober 2010 Radio 4 stopped broadcasting in Surround temporarily due to some technical issues. Nevertheless Radio 4 continues to record all concerts in Surround and hopes to resume the Surround broadcasts in the comming years".

I have not been able to find out WHY.

As far as I know the signal could be fed straight into a surround channel system. The quality, however, is not more than CD. So, not quite a shot in the arm for Muli Channel Super Audio.

Are you talking about satellite (DVB-S) broadcasts?

With most radio stations boardcasting on Astra (all the french and german public stations and many more), the quality in stereo is usually 192 kb/s, i.e. decent MP3 quality. I don't know if they significantly increase the bitrate for surround. Anyway, it's nowhere near CD quality, let alone SACD.

Surround sound has never been a monopoly for SACD. Don't forget that it was DVD that made surround popular. If home cinema hadn't pre-existed, multichannel SACD and DVD-A would never have been launched, after the quad fiasco in the 70's.

.

Yes, indeed. I forgot to mention that the satellite AND the internet signal had to be fed into a sourroud system. As to the rest of your remarks: I entirely agree.
