But the SCD-XA5400ES will output DSD or PCM via HDMI dependent on the receiver's capabilities, right?

Yes.

There was confusion about that originally because there is no user-accessible switch (it is handled by the EDID exchange with the receiver) and, also, because the EDID exchange was faulty with some processors. All that has, afaik, been resolved and the 5400 works fine with everything I can connect it to and it switches between DSD and PCM properly.

as far as I am aware the Sony DA5400es only outputs pcm via HDMI(according to SonyUK ) so I would be very interested to know how it can output DSD direct via HDMI perhaps the US version that lacks H.A.T.S. etc is different.

It outputs either DSD or PCM depending on to what it is connected. Also, according to the user's manual, it is supposed to support H.A.T.S. although I cannot confirm that myself.

Apparently, the customer service reps in the UK are no more knowledgeable than than CSRs in the US. ;-)

Thanks for the info. If you have the 5400ES combo, player & receiver H.A.T.S. has to be enabled from the receiver menu and it then is shown on the receiver display. Whilst very good the receivers are very troublesome I am now on my third one which has also failed maybe a set-up problem and I am awaiting assistance from the shop where I purchased same. You can probably enable H.A.T.S. without having the player connected. Unfortunately I am unable to try it at present.

Wow, trouble with a Sony product???

My heavy, over engineered, stereo only Marantz SA7 has worked without a hitch from the day I bought it.

So have all three of my lightweight Oppos.

Ahhh....it was a joke Kal. (In response to Disbeliever's incessant ramblings about the superiority of Sony and the inferiority of Marantz stereo SACD players)

I'm sure your Oppos perform wonderfully and sound superb. May get one myself for a surround set up in the future.

I just got the reply from OPPO local dealer. Apparently, the player could output either in 196k/24bit DSD format or 88.2k/24bit format down-converted to PCM. for my case, since my marantz nr1501 is too light weighted to support DSD input, i have no choice but to opt for PCM (which can support multi-channel) via hdmi. due to licensing issues, OPPO SACD cannot be output via digital optical or RCA.

my question is between 196k DSD and 88.2k PCM, will you be able to pick out the difference? to be honest, after reading heaps of replies, i am still confused. Some said yes, others supported no...

FYI 196K/24 Bit is PCM. DSD is 2.822 MHz/1 Bit.

Marantz SA-7S1 costs nearly 4 times more than the Sony receiver in the UK. is very poor value, but looks great. I have always acknowledged 7's excellent build which unfortunately does not IMO help the sound quality. I found the SACD performance poor and is stereo only. for CD it is not as good as my 22 year old Marantz CD94 ( purchased s/hand for £200 in 1994) admittedly modified but at very low cost compared to today's rip-off modification merchants. Marantz CD94 cost new when intoduced approx. £800.
