Hi Rammie! Yes, I know the "rich" of us get to go shopping everywhere in the world. :snicker:

Anyway, I'm in Santa Barbara right now and will be in Claremont tomorrow night. I don't plan to go into LA on this trip, but will be in Berkley and SF next weekend. Amoeba is in my sights and wonder if anyone has had any good experiences there lately.

Flyingdutchman,

I will be hosting a get together for Jared Sacks of Channel Classics at my home near Berkeley this weekend (Sunday). We (including some from the SA-CD.net forum) will have a discourse with Jared and, of course, listen to music and enjoy refreshments. If you are interested send me an email at: langvid@pacbell.net

In Bay Area I've got good experiences with Rasputin records but frankly I can't recall to what extent they had SACDs.

I purchased a lot of (SA-)CD's from Amoeba's, both used and new ones, some two years ago when I had been to San Francisco for a short visit.

I stopped by Amoeba on upper Haight a few months ago, and I was distinctly underwhelmed. Selection was decent but prices were high.

I haven't been there recently, but the Amoeba in the Haight was pretty good, though the previous poster seems to cast doubt on more recent trends.

The Haight Street Amoeba classical staff are well-informed and helpful. New and used classical (and jazz) SACDs come into the store on a regular basis. I've found titles from Channel, Challenge, Caro Mitis, BIS, Pentatone, Harmonia Mundi, Exton and Lyrinx, at very reasonable prices.

Any chance of finding out if SFSO intends to continue with SACD now the Mahler project is complete?

As a subscriber I would have hoped to hear something about further recordings, and I haven't. Most of the stuff the orchestra is doing now is for DVD ( I had the misfortune to have to sit through a concert which was being recorded for DVD - snippets of Mahler, it was, and I thought it would go on forever). The Mahler series was underwritten by Gordon Getty, of course, and absent that type of support I am pessimistic about future SACDs from the SFSO. Too bad, because the orchestra is playing really well, the 100th anniversary is coming next year, and MTT is now one of the longest serving music directors out there. The orchestra also responds to guest conductors extremely well - Semyon Bychkov has been brilliant the last two years, and they have also played well for Vanska and Dutoit. Remember when the Chicago Symphony was recording with Solti for Decca and with Giulini for EMI? My fantasy is that some label signs the SFSO to do 3-4 recordings with MTT each year and 1-2 with guest conductors....

Reports on here indicated that the Mahler series sold extremely well around the globe not just in the US, so given that amount of success one might reasonably expect further projects with the same recording team. Like you, I am keeping my fingers tightly crossed.

I am not sure how busy the Sound Mirror boys are these days? From time to time they produce another fine recording at Boston or Chicago so if they are doing their homework and staying abreast of developments you might think that they would propose new JV's with people like the SFSO, who are already aware of the huge sonic benefits of DSD recording.
