As Andre Previn so pointedly proved (in his Vaughan Williams and Rachmaninov recordings, among others) the remake often doesn't hold a candle to the original. None-the-less, Jansons' objective conducting style gives me hope that this could be a disc worth the time and effort! His Oslo 5th was one of the great Tchaikovsky discs of all time, in my book!

I agree. This may be one of those times when even more duplication of a warhorse is justified. Here's hoping, anyway.

I'd add the word "always" with regard to candle-holding -- but I agree entirely with you about the stature of his Chandos Oslo 5th. It's one of those performances where everything seems right. No nonsense, just inspired conducting.

You are talking about a remake in terms of album releases. But Jansons has certainly performed the 5th in concert many times since his Chandos recording in the 1980's, and this is just a recording of one such a live performance, made during a radio broadcast.
At a time when most orchestral releases consist of live recordings, CD releases can be considered more as documents than projects (which would justify the term remake). The CD is just a by-product.

I heard the Jansons sacd last night and it was a big yawn. Boring with sound that is murky. A pity BR didn´t release the Elgar/Vaughan Williams as a sacd since those performances are wonderful.
