THE QUESTION, LSO LIVE, IS: What have you done with this recording, and are you intending to release it?

I'm sure you don't want an answer from me, but LSO Live already has Previn's (by many accounts) fine recording, though not SACD, of course.

edit - crossed wires....

There have been very few recordings of it in any format in the last decade.

It's really not performed all that often. I bet the Mahler 8 is performed more frequently despite costing much more to stage.

I was hoping Davis had a performance of "Missa Solemnis" waiting release and the performance you describe sounds wonderful. I have the "Mass in C" and it's terrific. Does anyone know if his 70's performance for Philips was in quad? That would be nice to get from Pentatone, but probably not worth issuing if there is going to be a new release from the LSO. I would also be interested in performances from Vanska or Fischer. A couple of years ago James Levine conducted a very good performance here in Boston with a particularly moving contribution from the great René Pape. An sacd of that performance by BSO Classics would be greatly appreciated, but I'm not holding my breath since the BSO seem to be doing everything it can do insure that BSO Classics is a total failure.

The Previn is Brahms' "Ein deutsches Requiem"...

I do have Previn's performance of Brahms' 'Ein deutsches Requiem' with the LSO, and very fine it is, although not SACD. That was also a concert I attended, and I do know the difference between my Davises and my Previns, thank you. Previn has not recorded the 'Missa Solemnis' on LSO Live.

Yes, I do apologise - I cannot think how I became confused between the Brahms and the Beethoven..... That said, I meant Previn was already available, not that you didn't know the difference, I do assure you. No offence intended.

Accepted, thank you.

By the way, I have just e-mailed Chaz Jenkins at LSO Live, inviting him to comment on what has happened to Sir Colin's 'Missa Solemnis'. I hope he will respond here.

We did record Sir Colin's Missa Solemnis but there were a few problems with the recording and we've decided not release it. It was a great performance but everyone has to be happy with a recording if it is to be released. However, we are planning to do it again.

It as a German Requiem with Previn and we have not released that recording on SACD (sorry!).

Chaz

Many thanks for responding so quickly, Chaz. It is very sad news indeed that you are not going to release this performance. If you are planning to do it again, when is that likely? I've booked my tickets for the 2010-2011 season, and there's no sign of the 'Missa Solemnis' on the schedule with Sir Colin. However, there is a Janacek 'Glagolitic' from Sir Colin in October!?
