Gerald, after months of relatively innocuous postings it is good to see that you have not lost the knack of being thoroughly disagreeably offensive. It is an art of course and thankfully like all artists you have not forgotten the value of regular practice.

;)

Do you really think that Everard is in the same league as John Borwick, Geoff Horn ?

I cannot comment on his abilities relative to others, this being the first time I have read Gramophone (a thoroughly enjoyable read even though I do not buy classical music regularly), butreading his article on Blu Ray players, he was short of fine or accurate detail regarding blu ray players.

Cannot remember what though, and I cannot go into detail having left my copy in sunny Rhodes. :-(

Anyway, can anybody detail how to get a copy of the Blu Ray demo without teh magazine, i.e. what the web address was and the code required, please?

Register at: www.opusarte.com

Code: GRAM07 or GRAMO7; I assume the latter. (OH rather than ZERO)

I am not sure who Hired Fox is alluding to when he states my post is disagreeably offensive, towards either Everard, Opus Arte or both ? When the offer first came out in Sept. Gramophone I found it impossible to obtain the Free Offer with the code. I contacted Opus Arte who apologised saying they realised it was difficult but they would not accept my request to be put on the free mailing list without going via the site , after several attempts I gave up. I have now tried again but it seems the Free offer has expired as the site will not accept the GRAMO 7 Prom. code and they require payment for the sampler.

I hadn't tried as I don't have a bluray player. But, I have discovered the code is

GRAM07 (zero, not OH) which was accepted. And the order has gone through at no cost.

Well, the Opus Arte site is still advertising the offer on the front page with a direct route for Gramophone readers. I'd be very surprised if this wasn't still running, because we are talking about the September issue, and it isn't even September yet, unless I fell asleep in front of the telly and no one has bothered to tell me. I had a bit of trouble at first with the site and also found myself being asked to pay for the disc. However, I think you need to undertake the registration first, and, as I recall, at some point on the checkout route, it gives you the offer box to complete with the code which is GRAM07 as one 'word'.

I got my copy a few days ago, and very enjoyable it is, too, although visual and sonic qualities are not uniformly high. I've owned the 'Zauberflöte' set for some time, and the HD visuals and sound are excellent. Diana Damrau is one the best Queens of the Night I have heard, and, boy, does she do 'cross'!! Despite some odd anachronisms, this is a fine production that warrants repetition, with wonderfully sympathetic singing from Keenlyside, Hartmann and the lovely Dorothea Röschmann as Pamina, and superbly conducted by Sir Colin Davis. The tenor's initial blast in 'Bohème' put me off straight away, but I was very impressed and intrigued by von Otter's Carmen. The updated 'Gianni Schicchi' from Glyndebourne is terrific; Corbelli is just brilliant, and it is superbly conducted by Jurowski, as are the lively 'Fledermaus' and the excellent 'Cenerentola' which I have seen in full. These look and sound splendid, and several are on my short list. I had a bit of fun trying out the different sound formats, and I would be interested, given our hi-res interests, to hear others' views. If you have a fine supporting system, Blu-ray at this level is, in my view, a unique pleasure, especially with opera, ballet and some orchestral concerts.

Further to my earlier post, I managed to get hold of the NHK Schumann-Bruckner Blu-ray with Perahia and Haitink via E-bay, paying only £1.00 for the postage and no 'hostage fee'! It is every bit as good as its award says; excellent, un-fussy camera work, with crystal clear, but also richly gorgeous colour. These performances are as great (no exaggeration) as the ones I heard at the Barbican in London, shortly after they were recorded, and the disc presents perhaps the best surround sound I have yet heard from an orchestral concert. The Steinway sounds magnificent (bright, clear treble, with no clatter, and powerful, resonant bass), and the unique tonal qualities of the orchestra and the Concertgebouw Hall's ambience are beautifully captured. This is such a treasure!

Well, I placed my order a month ago but still haven't received the disc. Have chased Opus Arte but no reply so far.
