"edit in only the part I need"

"Nobody has ever picked the processed parts out as being inferior." (Bishop quote)

This is not the same as claiming that no one can hear a difference between DSD and PCM anyway. It just means that minor changes go unnoticed. The overall sound picture is different in the two formats, but not every note or passage. It is well known that the middle range of instruments sounds quite acceptable on CD, but not the high range. So no one would probably notice that a fluffed horn passage has been replaced, but it may be a different matter for a high-lying violin passage which is likely to sound more strident in PCM.

On a professional audio forum DSD is discussed and if anybody actually is using it. Michael Bishop of Telarc fame, after lavishing praise on DSD and Sonoma workstation says:

"If I need a tool that resides as a plugin on a pcm-only workstation, I'll simply transfer out at the highest-possible resolution, do the needed work and transfer back to DSD. I'll edit in only the part I need, leaving as much of the source DSD as intact as possible. Nobody has ever picked the processed parts out as being inferior."

I find this quite funny; after all the trouble of recording in DSD the parts that are converted to PCM can not be told apart from DSD. This brings the next question: why bother with the troublesome DSD in the first place???

Why bother with "troublesome DSD?" I challenge anyone to find the maybe ONE note that was pitch-corrected at 192kHZ and edited into the 60 minutes of pure DSD program. The overall results show why I bother.

Good tools are good tools, no matter the format.

Best Regards,

Michael Bishop

Mr. Bishop, we all appreciate your response and are honored that you are an advocate of SA~CD net. The next logical question: what is currently happening with Four/Five Productions? Are you at liberty to share with the posters on this website your plans for the future? I'm sure you are aware that we are still lamenting the demise of Telarc's SACD releases. A giant gap has been created that we all hope your new endeavor will help to alleviate and I, for one, have been vocal how the Concord Music Group has signed on a lot of new and important artists: James Taylor, Carly Simon, Ricki Lee Jones, the Frank Sinatra estate, Paul McCartney, etc and wonder if there is any chance you will license any of these titles for future SACD (and hopefully multi~channel) release? Just as vinyl has come back in a robust fashion, I feel that SACD with its improved hardware and the Grimm Audio Converter will both conspire to elevate SACD above its niche status and hope that you and your partners will heed the call for more popular fare since you never disappointed us in the past. Here's hoping for a bright and successful future for Four/Five Productions and we will anxiously be awaiting your reply. Thank you.

... Sonoma converts to high sample rate PCM internally for most operations, read the brochure carefully.

Perhaps earlier models?

In 2004 Sonoma offered many of the editing tools in the DSD domain for the first time. As of the 2009 the most recent Sonoma Multitrack Recorder Editor Features
• True DSD recording, editing, and level adjustments

Michael Bishop thanks for clearing things up! Looking forward to more of your PURE DSD recordings, hoping it will be soon.

Your can detect one faulty note easily, but not a second of DSD>PCM>DSD conversion, yes, the difference between PCM and DSD was still here but too slightly to detect.

I don't doubt that pitch correcting one note via conversion to PCM isn't likely to be noticeable.

Michael,

I know this is off topic, but what are your thoughts on DSD 128 vs. DSD 64? Have you ever directly compared the two? Any audible difference?

I see Pyramix will have DSD128fs capability in the near future.
