Thanks, Steven and Ralph. The OPPO BDP83SE looks to be a good option, although I will need to check out how it sounds for both RBCD and SACD via the analogue outputs. Does anyone know how it stacks up in terms of sound quality against the Sony XA5400 ES (which, of course, is not available from Sony in Australia)?

u can order xa5400es from dnet24.de, which will fit Australia's power req. the response is SLOOOOOWWWW, but i got the unit from them eventually. about 1.3 to 1.5k aussie bucks???

Osbert, if you plan to listen to SACD in multichannel, you can only do so with the Sony 5400 utilizing the HDMI connector.....otherwise, it is stereo only thru analogue outputs, and if you have any interest in video then the OPPO is quite the player. As I mentioned before, the RBCD playback is NOT great through the OPPO (even though it has HDCD which pushes it up a few notches). The SONY is supposedly better in that department. Kal Rubinson who writes for Stereophile Magazine and is a frequent poster on this site has both units so you might want to pose that question to him on a new post.

"The SONY is supposedly better in that department."

The Sony is definitely a first class cd player. I'm enjoying my CDs more than ever.

Osbert,
You don't really mention if you listen in stereo or multichannel. This can make a difference, as Rammie has mentioned.
The Sony 5400 is not available in Australia, and you may as well forget about it as an option as you would have to import it from somewhere, lose warranty, etc. etc.
You should search the various audio forums, like AudioAsylum, for information on the BDP 83SE, as it's fairly new on the market. The Oppo 83's are mainly Blu Ray players that have sacd chips in them. Most information about the players is oriented more toward the video side than the audio side of the player. And I think you are interested only in the audio side. You can read about the difference between the BDP83SE and the BDP83 on the Oppo website.
You can also gain information about the Oppos on the modwright forum on AudioCircle, as well as the customanalogue website I referred you to earlier.

There are also "upgraded" Oppos from some small manufacturers like Nuforce, Ayre, and a couple others that use the Oppo transport and make various changes to the rest of the player. These are more costly. You can buy the Nuforce direct on the web. Opinions on these "upgraded Oppos" varies.

Hi Osbert

I've just noticed that one of the Australian forums I regularly visit - DTV Forum - has a dedicated thread specifically discussing the Oppo BDP-83. It may be of some help if you are considering its purchase. If you are already aware of that thread - all 102 pages of it - my apologies.

I haven't gone back to read all the posts about your particular Krell problems, as I'm not in a situation to give any advice. Anyway, I hope it all works out for you positively in some way in the end. Robert.

I agree IMO the Sony 5400ES is the best value for money player on the market at present, excellent with CD & SACD especially via HDMI into its matching DA5400ES receiver. No other higher priced player that I know of can compete especially with MCH SACD. No modifications required, just use a heavy duty power cord.

With about 30W power consumption nothing less than 2.5mm2 cord would melt!

???

The UK version 5400ES is supplied with an ultra thin power cord & 5 amp fuse. Changing to a heavy duty power cord (not a overpriced exotic one) and a 13 amp fuse in the mains plug gives a worthwhile improvement

Does anyone believe there's a need to replace the power cord for the U.S. player?

This is way off topic, but........
Why does your player require a fuse the size of a circuit breaker?
Power consumption of any cd player is extremely low. The standard supplied fuse has to be sufficient in order to meet your UK safety standards.

Replacing fuses is generally a small thing, but one should NEVER replace fuses with anything but the specified value, and especially for an amperage value 2-3 times the specified value, for obvious safety reasons which should not be ignored.
Whereas swapping the mains leads to one of larger awg and fancy connectors is not a safety issue as the leads are a power delivery device, not a safety device.
