Not much else should be needed in terms of hardware, given the elegance and transparency of DSD coding. Mostly some software, I guess.

Hopefully some company will soon release at least a basic DSD player (it doesn't have to have voice recognition features built-in ;-) ) for DSD ready music servers.

Have you by any chance tried to play a DSD 128 file burned to DVD in the PS3 or the Sony SCD-XA5400ES?

Is there anyway could try to make a DSF DSD 128 file and burn it to a DVD and see if the PS3 or XA5400ES will play it? I've been dying to know for quite some time.

I've asked Sony and they said it will not work.

> A DSD converter is basically just an analog low pass filter, and it's entirely possible that the latest one Sony put in can also do DSD 128.

The D/A is just one part of the path. Everything up to there would have to support double data rate, including the drive which would have to spin and read at double speed. Sure it can be done but it's not necessarily trivial, let alone worth their while to make the effort.

You might want to read about the Korg MR-1. This is about the size of an iPod and runs on rechargeable battery or AC. It is a field recorder as well as portable player. It supports a whole list of formats including DSD like the MR-1000 and was released several years back.

While list is somewhere around $499 or maybe $599 I found one for just over $200 online and still see that price off and on. Pretty affordable for the quality it provides. Again it's USB connected to PC/network and comes with the same AudioGate software (worth the price alone IMO).

Can you play DSD files stored on the external HDD (connected to the Korg device through USB)?

Hello,
i own a Korg MR2000S and you can't connect an external HDD. Using USB you can transfer (from and to) internal hdd to your computer.

I am waiting for more release in DSD format to play with Korg ...... sound is really excellent with the few albums available

DSD can only be played in its native format directly from the Korg MR- player. That may not be obvious to everyone and isn't explained that clearly anywhere that I saw. But the Audiogate software (which can convert anything to anything including DSF, DFF, or WSD) cannot stream the DSD from the computer. It converts it to some PCM format specified first. (Windows Media player actually can do this as well with the right (free) plugin.)

So in order to hear DSD direcly, you have to upload/transfer the DSF files from a DSD Disc to the MR- player (file copy to the MR as a connected USB drive) and then play them from the MR- player in the native format.

As an afterthought here...There are sample DSF and other hi-res file downloads available from 2L's (Norway) website. Scroll down to see the DSF files. This is also a good way to do some comparisons for those interested (FLAC, WAV/DXD, DSF). Also some 5.1 downloads here.

@rrkradio, david elias

Thanks for the explanation.

BTW I recently stumbled upon an interesting SHARP presentation dating back to 2001(!) when the company had envisioned a DSD playback mode that would have allowed to stream DSD via USB from the hard drive, I think it's high time someone finally implemented the concept :-)

You should keep in mind however that all 2l files are sourced from multibit pcm (yes even dsf files).

audioholik -

very interesting diagram from a long ways back in hi-res history at least :) thanks.

most people don't realize that DSD-64 (2.8MHz, 1-bit) in the DSF format are smaller files than both DXD (about 4x bigger file) and even 24/96 WAV. So streaming DSD does not seem out of the question to me.

Here's the 2L link again (I had edited my earlier post for these sample downloads):

I have some of their earliest releases as SACD but didn't know that. Back to the "what is the source recording" question as far as comparison is concerned for sure... I've seen "Pure DSD" used as a qualifying tag, but don't know or really suspect that is applied consistently.
