These are wonderful performances of these works. They suffer from a terrible recording. I wonder if Esoteric will be able to fix some of the problems. One that will remain forever, is the ruthlessly tasteless, pile-driver playing of the lead trumpet of the Leningrad Orchestra. It is piercing and overpowers the complete ensemble, not to mention, tasteless...
Otherwise, the conductor does really get emotional and propulsive readings of these works. The RBCD issue is one of the mainstays of the catalog and has been so for many years.

I kind of doubt anything can be done with the trumpet player. It would be nice if this were in 3 channel, but I doubt it.
BTW, the cover only shows the 5th symphony. Am I seeing that wrong or do we not get the 4th and the 6th too?

DGG has a two RBCD set of the three works... These are the same mastertapes...
I would just as soon have Ormandy with Philadelphia, the older CBS readings, NOT the ones on DELOS...
Ormandy makes this music SING!
Also, there is a GREAT Stokowski Decca performance of 5 that is a must-have... the passion jumps out of the speakers...
Also, Stokowski's RCA 6th is wonderful and the RBCD has Dolby Surround encoding.

As indicated in the listing here and on Esoteric's site, this is to be a 2-disc set of Symphonies 4-6. Therefore, one would hope that the final cover art would use this very similar design from the DG Originals series (minus the signature image formatting used in that series).

Looks like it was an original digital recording which does not auger well for this series. Two previous D-to-D transcriptions have been turkeys.

Nope -- these recordings were made in 1960, two decades before DG's first digital recordings. Perhaps your monitor can't resolve it, but the designation in the lower left corner is "ORIGINAL-IMAGE BIT-PROCESSING", which is DG's proprietary remastering technology (probably just 24-bit/96kHz with some sort of tweaking that they don't specify).

I'm guessing this is the 1960 stereo recording, and not the earlier mono recordings DG also released on the "Originals" banner, with Sanderling replacing Mravinsky on the 4th?

The cover art is a reproduction of the stereo DG LP issue from the early 1960's. A pretty good indication, I'd say, that the Esoteric release will be of Mravinsky's 1960 performances in stereo.

That's what I found to be confusing so is this jacket illustration indicative of a re-release as a digital version in the 1990's? If so, we must hope as you say that they have used the original analogue tapes and not the 96/24 OIBP version in this latest re-hash?
Please clarify more if you can.

This unlikely to be the 'original bit image processing' version above as Esoteric say that they are working from new 24/96 transfers made from the analogue tapes in Europe.
I think jlk155 has just confused the situation with that cover illustration.
