Discussion: Rimsky-Korsakov: Orchestral Suites - Pletnev

Is this a start of some further Rimsky? Pletnev never impressed me after his 1 off recording of the Tchaikovsky 6th on Virgin. His Tchaikovsky on DG is turgid and lacking personality.

While I agree that the rest of his recordings have not been as revelatory as that Virgin Tchaikovsky 6th, his Tchaikovsky 3rd was great! And though I'm not sure I'd characterize it as great, I wouldn't want to be without his Beethoven 6th.

The Rimsky Golden Cockerel is okay, but I'm still really excited to get the orchestral music from Mlada with any world-class ensemble on SACD!

People possibly need to be reminded that way back in 1984 Chandos recorded some of the music from seven of Rimsky-Korsakov's Orchestral Suites ( including the ubiquitous "Flight of the Bumblebee" from "The Tale of Tsar Saltan") for RDCD with Neeme Jarvi conducting the Scottish National Orchestra. I have often listened to these extraordinary CDs over the years and it is pleasing to see some of this music plus extra pieces making their way onto SACD in even better sound. I hope that one day we will have more of Rimsky-Korsakov's Orchestral Suites and his less well known music played and recorded.

Hats off to Polyhymnia for achieving the transparency on this disc. This isn't just reference quality; this is in a class by itself. Must be heard to be believed.
