Thanks Robert for filling an important gap in the SACD discography. The piano concerto 2 is one of my favourite Prokofiev works (together with his symphonies 2 and 3).

I will repeat that except I incline more toward the symphonies #6 and in the right performance, #7 - Leif Ove Andsnes (can you believe it) with the Bergen Philharmonic recorded it for SIMAX in 1990. That should be done over for SACD. Andsnes conception of the symphony is colorful and quite bold.

So how does the second concerto compare to others? Gutierrez/Jarvi (my reference) or Kissin/Ashkenazy for example?

I was just lamenting the lack of an SACD No.2 yesterday, and boom, here it is! I eagerly await its release.

The second concerto is my favourite Prokofiev piano concerto and Freddy Kempf is a fine pianist and Andrew Litton a perceptive conductor so this could be a gem. It's perhaps a pity that it was wasn't coupled with the fourth concerto which has had far fewer recordings that the (dare I say) over-popular number 3.

Over-popular?
