Micheal Fremer concluded in his new review of Neil Young (discs 1-4 box set) that 192k/24bit Blu-ray versions can't touch the vinyl, but this probably isn't surprising to most here as it's not a DSD format.

To me it isn't surprising as Fremer is a vinyl fan.

I think he would even prefer an LP made from a hi-rez digital master than hearing the master itself ;-)

Have you seen Avatar? Make sure you see it before you call it rubbish.

Agreed. I've just seen it and it's the only film where 3D even works. Great stuff. But IMHO, for 3D Blu-ray to take off, there needs to be good material and studio commitment. Not just Ice Age and Avatar. We'll see, but I cautiously pessimistic, seeing how studios can't even manage to do many proper Blu-ray transfers of many 2D and classic films - which is a rather simple process. A lot of DNR and EE aplied, etc. But who knows, maybe the younger generation likes a classic film to look as if it was shot by Pixar..

PS let's wait for the new Nat Cole SACD's, according to Steve Hoffman they sound transparent to the original masters (forget about LPs)!

LOL, I don't know how anyone can take Fremer seriously. The guy frankly has no clue what he's yapping about 1/2 the time. Holt was the last good editor at Stereophile. The rest are..

Mostly in the pockets of the manufacturers with their freebies etc.You have to listen for yourself.

I have watched the trailer and the special effects are very clever but IMO the content is TOTAL CRAP. I adnit I do not like sci-fi .

That's like someone listening to 5 second spots of a recording he bought to only say it's crap (and believe me, there's someone who used to be on goodmusicguide.com who did just that).

You can't comment on the content unless you see the whole movie. This makes whatever you say on this forum clearly suspect.

Of course. No other medium has the same crackle and pop that vinyl provides.

You are, of couse, forgetting about Kal Rubinson, who, like Fremer is a writer, and not an editor. Kal easily makes Stereophile worth subscribing to. He strongly supports SACD and Mch. He is about the only music-oriented writer who has done his homework about some exceptional breaththrough technologies like Audyssey and Anthem ARC. His reviews are a model of directness, understatement and exceptionally high credibility. I wish there were more in the audio press like him. Only Tony Cordesman comes close, in my view.

I think we agree about Michael Johnny One-Note Fremer.

I would if Kal's column was monthly. Until then I have gotten out of the "Stereophile habit" after more years than I can remember.

Mr. Cordesman has been in a class of his own for a very long time.
