This new thread stems from the Thread:
"Any experiences with a combi DVD-A and SACD player?"
and randy's reply

In regards to: http://www.daisy-laser.com/tech3g.htm

the page states that "a 20-to-24-bit precision can be approached in 16-bit digital audio (SACD hybrid discs) with Super Bit Mapping Direct"

When I originally purchased the Diana Krall "look of Love" US hybrid disc and compared the compact disc layer of the hybrid disc to the local CD release through Universal in Australia. I actually found the hybrid CD layer of superior quality to the local CD pressing. I initially thought it was poor mastering on the local part, but the process, as explained at the above refered web site, named SBM direct
"allows to filter and noise shape the DSD signal in a single stage. As a result, interstage requantizing errors are here again suppressed, ripple is eliminated, and aliasing is minimised."
can explain perceived difference between the two editions.
With that said, it would be reasonable to argue to those only with CD players will benefit straight away and I feel the record companies and manufacturers should promote the benefits of the SBM Direct with hybrid discs.
I gather the DG hybrid manufactured in Germany, have not used this process?
or do all of the manufacturers utilise the SBM Direct process?
If not, all manufacturers should - it should have been set as standard and more marketing aimed at those with only Cd players should be adopted to promote this benefit if they purchase the hybrid version
Also SBM Direct should be clearly labelled on future hybrid releases.

Just received John Williams [the guitarist] latest Sony album "Ël Diablo Suelto"
[Sk 90451]...the album is an analog recording, DSD mixed and mastered and the CD utlises SBM Direct.
This is one CD album that illustrates where those with only Cd players will also benefit from DSD and SBM-Direct.
A superb performance and recording, it is a real shame that it was not released on a hybrid SACD....Hopefully Sony may release in the hybrid format in the future [wish list/].
Although the SBM-Direct logo was not placed on the outer sleeve - only mention in the engineering notes on the back page of the booklet!

Azure, I couldn't agree with you more. I think the SBM-Direct performs something of a miracle on DSD recordings or masters destined to be hybrids playing on conventional CD systems. We used this process on my SACD project "The Window" which was recorded to DSD on a Sonoma. The resulting redbook layer was the product of a SBM-direct transformation (I'm not technically knowledgable here). There is no doubt in my mind that the rich sonic qualities of DSD were imparted to a great extent on the hybrid layer of the disc, which I've been told sounds "better" by all kinds of non-critical listeners, hearing it through low-fi equipment including Walkmans, cars and boom boxes. This is even more true on better outfitted non-SACD systems. To me, this "SBM Magic" makes DSD a wide-consumer differentiator for excellent sonic quality potential on today's existing CD stereo systems.

There's more discussion on this subject at the Audio Asylum forum if you care to track it there. It starts at
