Coming soon on MFSL. Already have the Holst Planets recording and would like to have someone's opinion on the performance more than anything. I've been hoping for a Ma Vlast to come out. Is this the one?

This may be irrelevant, but my touchstone for Ma Vlast has always been Kubelik-first the BSO recording on DG (still have my reel to reel), later the Orfeo recording with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. In all, Kubelik made 5 recordings-Chicago (mono), Vienna, Boston, Munich and Prague. I've not heard the last, it is supposed to be very special. (I haven't heard Chicago or Vienna, either)
I heard Susskind live once, with the Cleveland Orchestra on tour-he must have been subbing for Szell, who had recently passed away. He seemed competent, but the major piece on the program was the Dvorak 8th, which was a Szell speciality. I don't know that the Susskind recording has made very many short lists for Ma Vlast.
Can we hope for an Audite edition of Ma Vlast with Kubelik, live?

Kubelik is my benchmark to, but interestingly I don't have the BSO recording but all the others he recorded.

never mind, after DG recording you probably wont recognise the BSO anyway. How about the sonics of the Orfeo recording ? (their recording of Beethoven 4 also with the bavarian radio symphony, this time under Kleiber, is my favourite for that symphony sonicaly and musicaly)

I love the Orfeo recording. It is perhaps the most lyrical of all the Kubelik recordings (the final live recording the most dramatic and uplifting, the mono the most violent and angry).

Have you heard the Susskind in multi-channel yet?
I saw in your review that you had at that time not set up your equipment yet. I was quite impressed with it at my father's house, but haven't heard it here.

This isn't the flyingdutchman, only fafnir, but I've owned the Susskind for a few months and played it many times.
The lyrical approach adopted by Susskind works very well IMHO and is a perfectly viable alternative to more dramatic readings. My gold standard is this piece has been a performance that I recorded off-the-air with Kubelik and the CSO (not the recording - a live concert from about 1985 or so). Susskind is a close second; he obviously loved this music, and it shows. The orchestra's playing is not as ideomatic as the VPO or Czech Phil, but is fine nevertheless. For example, the opening minutes of "The High Castle" are incredibly beautiful.
The sound is quite good without being state-of-the-art. VOX did a much better job of recording the St. Louis Symphony than RCA did a few years later. In spite of being a 4.0 recording, the sound stage is excellent with no hole in the middle and good ambience from the side speakers. The main deficiency is a slight tendency to hardness in loud passages. Considering that this piece has the reputation of being difficult to record because of its prominent high frequency content, this is a commendable effort.
Highly recommended with only very minor reservations.

Just to say, fafnir, I agree with you 100% (though I've yet to hear it surround).
I'm hoping MF will issue the other half of the Gershwin, too. (Amazon has/had it as Cayfish Row, a hybrid I assume of a crayfish and a catfish.)

flyingdutchman calls this "a great performance with above average sound" and I bought this on his and the other reviewer's recommendation.
i'd say the sound in MC (4.0) is WELL above average (absolutely miles better than sir colin davis's LSO live recording) and i enjoyed the performance greatly. so thanks for all the comments.
the recording dates from over 30 years ago. whither progress?!
